Safety at Sea Seminars: An Important Offshore Tool
Have you ever been racing or cruising with friends and suddenly the wind comes up? A lot of times a fun day on the water can turn into something entirely different if everyone onboard doesn't have the skills to handle the unexpected. This is one reason US SAILING offers the Safety at Sea Seminars (SASS), which are renowned as the best source of information on everything from safety equipment, heavy weather sailing, search and rescue techniques, weather forecasting and common medical conditions at sea. And the numbers prove it. Nine seminars have already happened this year with more than 1,700 offshore sailors attending. US SAILING expects 200 more sailors for the
three remaining seminars scheduled in May and June. In the last 10 years, more than 13,000 sailors have attended.

US SAILOR of the Week - Ron Trossbach
"I come ashore because I have to," says retired U.S. Navy Captain Ron Trossbach, who didn't know how to sail when he attended the U.S. Naval Academy 55 years ago. A lot has changed since then. This summer, Ron will spend his 19th summer aboard his boat in Maine. His sailing companions are his wife Kathy and their dog Uncle Sam (born on July 4). He and his wife have sailed 80,000 miles under sail and, most recently, on their powerboat. "That will keep me on the water for 15 more years," he says. "But I'm ready to buy back my sailboat. I can't afford fuel for the powerboat"...

Pitt/Shafer Win U.S. Multihull Championship
US SAILING kicked off its 2008 season of U.S. National Adult Championships - all of which are sponsored by Rolex Watch U.S.A - with the U.S. Multihull Championship, which wrapped up last Saturday. Nigel Pitt (Hartwell, GA) and Alex Shafer (Clermont, FL) won the event hosted by Gulfport Yacht Club in Gulfport, FL, after several days of intense racing on Capricorn F18s. The team was presented with the Hobie Alter Cup Saturday evening at the awards ceremony. The newly crowned champions jumped into the lead on day three of the regatta, but the lead was never comfortable enough until they secured the title on the final day of racing.

Championship Eliminations Restructure to Raise Entries
To make it easier for busy sailors to compete in elimination events at the local level for U.S. Adult Championships, US SAILING has changed the format for the eliminations. Most are now held during weekends and are open events. To compete at the national level, racers can submit a resume to apply but the best chance for success is by competing in an Area Elimination. Sailors can be as young as 16 to sail in these prestigious adult events. Young sailors should be encouraged by Betsy Alison, who was in her early 20s when she won the U.S. Women's Championship and Kyle Rogachenko, the reigning U.S. Singlehanded Champion, who is just 19 years old.

Red Wins Top Honors at Annapolis NOOD In yacht racing, as in life, nothing is over until the fat lady sings, and so it was in the most competitive fleet in the US SAILING-sanctioned 2008 Sperry Top-Sider Annapolis NOOD, the Melges 32 class. Two boats had been duking it out the entire eight-race series, Michael Carrol and Marty Kullman's New Wave, and Joe Woods' Red. The final race was a boat-on-boat death match between the 2 boats...
