Members Get New Benefit: Two-for-One Discount at Sail America Shows
US SAILING has teamed up with Sail America, the trade association for the U.S. sailing industry, to provide US SAILING members with an exclusive discount to visit Sail America and National Marine Manufacturers Association's (NMMA) popular Strictly Sail sailboat shows and SailFests. Under the new agreement, US SAILING members will enjoy a discount of two tickets for the price of one for all of the upcoming Strictly Sail and SailFest events in the next year.

The new partnership enables US SAILING members to enjoy the best discount offered in the sailing industry: purchase one ticket and get a second ticket free, which applies to all ticket types (including weekday, weekend, two-day and five-day passes) to all upcoming Strictly Sail and SailFest events in the next year:
• Strictly Sail Pacific, Oakland, CA: April 16-20, 2008
• Virginia In-Water Boat Expo and SailFest: Sept 14-16, 2008
• Strictly Sail St. Petersburg: Nov 2008 (exact dates to be confirmed)
• Baltimore Boat Show (featuring SailFest): Jan 21-25, 2009
• Strictly Sail Chicago: Jan 29-Feb 1, 2009
• Strictly Sail Miami: Feb 12-16, 2009

The partnership kicks off with the upcoming Strictly Sail Pacific show, the largest sailboat show on the West Coast, to be held April 16-20 at Jack London Square in Oakland, Calif.

Based on the very successful Morning Light Preview organized by US SAILING last month in Newport, R.I., Sail America will host a similar preview of select scenes from the film at Strictly Sail Pacific on Thursday, April 17.  Executive Producers Roy E. Disney and Leslie DeMeuse-Disney, along with Morning Light crew Piet van Os and Graham Brant-Zawadski, will present select clips from the movie and answer questions. The event is open to exhibitors and boat show ticket holders for that day.

Everything in John Vandemoer's life is all about sailing. At work, as head sailing coach at the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, MD, he talks about sailing non-stop. And when he gets home, the sailing talk doesn't stop, since he's married to US Sailing Team AlphaGraphics member Molly O'Bryan. Every day at work, he runs sailing practices and manages the Navy team's huge facility which holds the dinghy fleets used to host massive sailing events. As regatta chairman at these events, John manages 18-20 teams while also coaching his own team of 32 "players"...

After a week of extremely tight racing at the Yngling European Championship in Blanes, Spain, US Sailing Team AlphaGraphics members Sally Barkow, Carrie Howe, and Debbie Capozzi stole the medal race by a nose and finished in second place overall last Saturday. Having led on the first day of racing, Team Seven fell after a bad race on day two, but kept chipping away in the close fleet where every point counted.

US SAILING at St. Barths Bucket Regatta
Last week concluded the St. Barths Bucket Regatta where 28 megayachts enjoyed three days of racing in 16-25 knot winds. The Bucket is a pursuit race with staggered starts. The slowest boats have a head start and the first across the finish line wins. Feeding daily forecasts of wind speed and direction into the Offshore Racing Rule's velocity prediction program (VPP), US SAILING's Jim Teeters computed the starting times for a wildly diverse fleet. Many of the boats have highly compromised sail aerodynamics such as stowaway mains with no roach and battens and headsails that need to be furled on every tack.  Therefore, the start times often include adjustments based on observation of races. The result: the tightest finishes ever.
