Leading the sport of sailing for 111 years

The Paralympic SKUD-18 fleet was very competitive, USA's Nick Scandone and Maureen McKinnon-Tucker dominated by winning seven races.

Tough Competition Brings Out the Strongest Competitors

US SAILING's Rolex Miami OCR concluded last Saturday after several days of highly competitive racing. The regatta, an ISAF Grade 1 world ranking event that attracts elite sailors as well as up-and-comers, hosted 369 sailors from 34 countries. Racing for the three Paralympic classes (SKUD-18, Sonar and 2.4mR) wrapped up on Friday after five days of racing. The four Olympic classes competing in the event (Laser, Laser Radial, Star, and Yngling) concluded their racing on Saturday with medal racing for the top ten sailors in each fleet, following a new sailing format that will debut at the 2008 Olympic Games in Qingdao, China.

Star: Xavier Rohart/Pascal Rambeau (FRA)
Yngling: Mandy Mulder/Mary Faber/Merel Witteveen (NED)

Rick Merriman

US SAILOR of The Week - Rick Merriman 
Dedication is something Rick Merriman does not take lightly. As an 11-year-old in St. Petersburg, FL, he started sailing Optis and quickly earned his way to the highest level, even winning the Opti Worlds in Turkey. He graduated to Lasers as a teen and brought his talent and dedication to the Naval Academy where he was voted All American Skipper three times before graduating in 1985. Accomplished sailors don’t get there alone, and Rick was no exception, owing a lot of his success to his dedicated parents, Dick and Kathy. Sadly, his mother passed away last week, just before the start of US SAILING's Rolex Miami OCR. "I did it for her," he said about making the decision to the race...

US SAILING Wins Best of Show Award at Strictly Sail Chicago
US SAILING was present in full force at Strictly Sail Chicago last week, winning the Best of Show award in the large booth category. The US SAILING display, located in the center of the boat show at Navy Pier in Chicago, included several Olympic and Paralympic class sailboats and a wide range of information about the organization. The award selection is based on several categories, including quality surroundings, sailing appeal, and staff presentation.

2008 Yngling Women’s Worlds Kicks Off Friday
When the racing commences at the 2008 Yngling Women’s World Championship this Friday, February 8, at the US Sailing Center in Miami, Florida, the top-ranked US Sailing Team AlphaGraphics members in the Yngling class will be on the starting line. Team Seven members Sally Barkow, Carrie Howe, and Debbie Capozzi will be prepared to face a tough battle against the world's top Yngling teams, including recent US SAILING Rolex Miami OCR winners Mandy Mulder, Mary Faber, and Merel Witteveen from the Netherlands. The World Championship wraps up on Friday, February 15.

Strong USA Presence at 2008 Laser Worlds
160 competitors representing 56 nations are expected to participate in the 2008 Laser World Championships in Terrigal, Australia, kicking off this Thursday, February 7. The USA will be present with a large contingency, including '08 U.S. Olympic Team member Andrew Campbell, as well as Brad Funk (Olympic alternate), Derick Vranizan, Luke Lawrence, Zack Marks, and Trevor Moore. The World Championship concludes on Wednesday, February 13.

Championship Of Champions Now Accepting Applications
Have you won a National, North American or World Championship since August, 2007?  If so, you are eligible to apply for the 2008 Championship of Champions. US SAILING will select twenty competitors who are the current National, North American, or World One-Design Champions of their respective classes. Sponsored by Rolex Watch U.S.A. and LaserPerformance, the Championship of Champions will be held in September at Sayville Yacht Club, NY, in Sunfish.

U.S. Disabled Championship Registration Now Open
Singlehanded, doublehanded and triplehanded sailors with disabilities are invited to register for the U.S. Disabled Championship for the Independence Cup. Top disabled sailors will compete aboard specially adapted boats on Long Island Sound from June 6 to June 9. For the first time this year, there will be an additional doublehanded fleet for novice sailors. These competitors are invited to race in adapted Ideal 18s. Sponsored by Rolex Watch U.S.A. and Dry Creek Vineyard, American and Larchmont Yacht Clubs will host this US SAILING National Championship event.

US SAILING Welcomes New Director of Race Administration
Pat Sheehan of Jamestown, RI, was named US SAILING’s new Director of Race Administration this week, a role that now includes on-the-water race management. Sheehan brings a wealth of experience to the team, including 13 years as the New York Yacht Club’s first sailing director, and the position of International Jury Secretary for the 2000 and 2003 America’s Cups in New Zealand. Sheehan’s predecessor, Lacey Given, will assist the team as a consultant for the next 6 months. We welcome Pat and look forward to her successful future with US SAILING.
