Leading the sport of sailing for 111 years

With 66 boats, the Star class is the largest fleet competing in US SAILING's Rolex Miami OCR

US SAILING's Rolex Miami OCR
in Full Swing

Wednesday marks day three of racing at US SAILING's Rolex Miami OCR where 369 Olympic and Paralympic sailors from 34 countries are competing in four Olympic classes (Laser, Laser Radial, Star, and Yngling) and three Paralympic classes (2.4mR, SKUD-18 and Sonar). As an International Sailing Federation Grade 1 event, the regatta figures into world rankings, and some countries are selecting their 2008 Olympic and Paralympic teams based on results here. For the Olympic classes, racing will conclude on Saturday with the medal races; the Paralympic classes conclude their racing on Friday.

After two days of racing, the only sailors at the regatta with a perfect score are US Sailing Team AlphaGraphics-members Nick Scandone and Maureen McKinnon-Tucker in the SKUD-18.

The racing will heat up throughout the week, so make sure to check out the event website for the latest results and photos. Video will be available daily from Thursday through Saturday.

Young San Diego Sailor Wins Design Contest

Seventeen year-old Katherine Pogue of San Diego, CA, has been named winner of the US SAILING poster and event logo design contest for the 2008 USA Junior Olympic Sailing Festivals Program. Her winning logo will be featured on all posters, t-shirts, stickers, hats and knit shirts supporting the program. Pogue’s design was selected after several focus groups of young sailors reviewed all of the contest submissions. Her design was the most popular, and will look great on the poster and other collateral, which will be published in March. In addition to her name and winning design on hundreds of shirts, hats, and stickers around the country, the young sailor also received a cash prize.

US SAILOR of The Week - Katherine Pogue
San Diegan Katherine Pogue, the 17-year-old graphic artist who designed the winning Junior Olympic logo, was first drawn to sailing by its history. As a fifth grader, she went to the Maritime Museum of San Diego and spent a night on the deck of the 1863 Tall Ship Star of India. Actors portrayed times of old, pretending they were sailing out to Australia as immigrants, and the lure of maritime history captured her imagination. Summer sailing lessons in a Sabot followed, and when asked what she likes most about being captain of her own small vessel, sailing has a broad appeal: "I like all of it, really."

Erin Maxwell (Stonington, CT) and Isabelle Kinsolving (New York, NY) concluded their winning streak down under in Melbourne, Australia, by winning the 470 Women's World Championship earlier today. The impressive victory follows their win earlier this month at Sail Melbourne, an ISAF Grade 1 event. The team of 28-year-olds defeated a very competitive fleet of 58 boats from across the globe, finishing an emphatic ten points ahead of world's number one ranked team and silver medalists in this event, Italians Giulia Conti and Giovanna Micol.

Sweet Victories and Smiling Faces at Acura Key West 2008
The emotion was palpable last Friday as Barking Mad owner Jim Richardson and tactician Terry Hutchinson embraced in a heartfelt hug, Groovederci skipper Deneen Demourkas sported a huge smile after being thrown in the water, and Numbers owner Dan Meyers wore a look of complete satisfaction. Those are the undeniable signs of victory. Acura Key West 2008, presented by Nautica and sanctioned by US SAILING, was among the strangest and most challenging in the 21-year history of the regatta. However, what the sailors will remember is a spectacular final day of racing and the final results.
