Leading the sport of sailing for 111 years

US SAILING's 2008 Rolex Miami OCR: The World at its Door

As a January 21 "early deadline" draws near, US SAILING's Rolex Miami OCR, scheduled for January 27 to February 2, 2008, is shaping up nicely as an international primer for the Olympic and Paralympic Games in Qingdao, China this August. Over 100 teams have signed up, and many of the 25 represented nations -- including the USA, Canada and Great Britain, which have the largest contingents at 24, 15 and 11 teams, respectively -- either have sent their final teams or will be selecting who moves on to the Olympic or Paralympic Games based on results at this popular International Sailing Federation (ISAF) Grade One ranking event.

"The ISAF World Rankings have recently been updated and will be updated again once the Rolex Miami OCR and a flurry of World Championships in the first quarter are completed," said US SAILING’s High Performance Director Gary Bodie. "We are happy that our event continues to figure so highly in the planning for elite sailors across the globe."

John Siegel of San Francisco, CA, retired on April 1, 1998 – just in time to prepare for the Pacific Cup race from San Francisco to Hawaii. He began sailing in his 30s, when he was looking for an alternative to golf. He often sails with his wife, Joy, who is also an accomplished sailor.

US Sailing Team Update
While many of the country's top Olympic class sailors have fled to the warmer waters of Florida to prepare for US SAILING's Rolex Miami OCR, quite a few athletes are down under in Australia competing in their class' world championships. Kicking off 2008 on a strong note, '08 U.S. Olympic sailors Tim Wadlow and Chris Rast finished fifth in the 49er World Championship in Melbourne earlier this week. Up next is the RS:X World Championship at Takapuna Beach, Australia (Jan. 10-20) with USA sailors Mike Gebhardt, Farrah Hall, Nancy Rios, and Denis Parris competing. Also, Laser sailor Andrew Campbell, who will represent the USA at the '08 Games, is in Australia getting ready for his class' world championship to be held next month. A few days ago, he finished fifth in the Laser Australian Championship.

National Sportsmanship Award Nomination Deadline
U.S. sailors have just another week, until Jan. 16, to nominate someone for US SAILING's national sportsmanship award, the W. Van Alan Clark, Jr. Sportsmanship Trophy. Sportmanship is difficult to define, but as George Fisher, Chairman of US SAILING's Sportsmanship Committee, says, "Demonstrating good sportsmanship is very noticeable and necessary in competitive sailing. Whether it is the conduct of the skippers and their crew, or even the event organizers or race officials, cooperation, courtesy and fair play are essential to the continuation and growth of competitive sailing and to keep our sport fun. How you race is as important as how you finish." The trophy will be presented at US SAILING's Spring Meeting in Newport, RI, in March.
