Leading the sport of sailing for 110 years

2007 Annual Appeal for Youth Sailing On Its Way to Reach Goal

The 2007 US SAILING Annual Appeal has raised just over $57,000 from 380 donors for youth sailing programs. This represents 76% of the $75,000 goal. We need everyone's help to reach the goal by December 31, 2007. We have an exciting 2008 planned with youth sailing seminars, training clinics, and regattas, but we need your help to make it happen. The sailors of tomorrow will thank you.

In 2006, over 4,000 youth sailors participated in 25 USA Junior Olympic Sailing Festivals and 7 Junior Championships held across the country. Whether you race offshore or around the buoys; are involved with race administration or judging; or are a proud parent, we hope you agree that US SAILING must encourage and develop the next generation. Donations can easily be made online or via phone.

Jan Smeets

US SAILOR of The Week - Jan Smeets
As Commodore of Larchmont Yacht Club in New York, Jan Smeets knows a thing or two about the inner workings of a yacht club. Following the path that's common at many yacht clubs, Jan climbed the ranks at the club and is now halfway through his two-year term as commodore. A lifelong sailor who learned to sail as a kid growing up in Curacao, Jan has owned his share of boats over the years. He's currently the proud owner of a J/133 named Bacchanal. According to his wife Anne-Mieke, the name for the boat follows Jan's mantra of enjoying life....

Record Number of Youth Sailors at Martin County JO
The USA Junior Olympic Sailing Festival (JO) at the US Sailing Center of Martin County in Jensen Beach, FL, last weekend had a record number of boats in attendance. More than 180 youth sailors, which is more than twice the number of participants over last year's event, enjoyed the competition in Optis, Laser 4.7s, Laser Radials, and Club 420s. The JO program is a national series of regattas for young sailors ages 8 to 21 organized nationally by US SAILING. Each event in this family of regattas is hosted by a different club or organization, but all events share a common goal: to encourage young sailors to enjoy sailing and to develop their skill. Up next is the last event of the 2007 season of the JO program: the popular Orange Bowl Regatta in Miami, FL, with 700 sailors expected to compete.

Design Contest for Junior Olympic Festivals Program Logo
For all creative sailors out there, US SAILING has launched a design contest to help the organization create the 2008 logo for the USA Junior Olympic Sailing Festivals program. (JO) The deadline to submit your design is January 2, 2008. To support and promote the JO program, US SAILING produces a poster every year providing details on each event. The poster is distributed to about 6,000 sailing organizations and sailors. Artwork from the poster is also incorporated on the official program T-shirts and other promotional materials.
