Safety at Sea Committee Discusses High Speed Rescues

Stan Honey is a renowned sailor, navigator, electrical engineer, and member of US SAILING's Safety at Sea Committee. One year ago, he navigated Team ABN AMRO One to win the grueling Volvo Ocean Race. After his return home, Stan Honey sat down to write about his experiences on board ABN AMRO One in an article for the Cruising Club of America (CCA).

As many sailors do, Honey learns new things every time he's on the water. During the Volvo Ocean Race, one of the many things he learned is that the traditional rescue methods of the Quickstop and Lifesling do not work at 35 knots of boat speed. Honey's article, Navigating, Stacking, Surfing, Snacking, Surviving - which the CCA generously provided to US SAILING - and his experiences have resulted in US SAILING's Safety at Sea Committee discussing the potential of studies and techniques focusing on this new issue.

US SAILOR of The Week - Bob Hobbs
If you were a college sailor at some point in the last three decades or so, then you probably know Bob Hobbs. For over 25 years, Bob could always be found on a race committee or judge's boat at the Inter-Collegiate Nationals. "I know most of the big names in sailing today from the days they were sailing in college," says Bob. And if you don't know Bob from the college sailing scene, then you probably know him from the time he served as US SAILING President or when he was on one of many US SAILING committees at one point or another...

US SAILING Kicks Off 2007 Annual Appeal
US SAILING has launched its 2007 Annual Appeal to further strengthen youth sailing initiatives in the United States with a goal of raising $75,000. These initiatives include providing more resources for the countless volunteers that organize US SAILING-sanctioned youth regattas. You must agree with us that today’s youth sailors represent the future of our sport. This year’s Annual Appeal is off to a strong start, but we still need your help to reach our ambitious goal.  If you have not received it already, please keep an eye on your mailbox for the 2007 Annual Appeal solicitation and join us in supporting this important cause. Last year, US SAILING raised $53,000 through its first Annual Appeal to develop and support a curriculum, community sailing handbook, and rating database for disabled sailors.

Columbus, OH, might be a land-locked city but great sailing is thriving in that part of the country. The venue for next week's One-Design Sailing Symposium has five sailing lakes and three highly competitive racing clubs: Buckeye Yacht Club, Hoover Sailing Club, and Leatherlips Yacht Club. Sailors race a variety of one-dseign classes, from Thistles and Lightnings to Lido 14s and Windmills. Hoover, Leatherlips, and Buckeye each claim Thistle Class National Champions and nearby Cowan Lake Sailing (Cincinnati), Indianapolis Sailing Club, Crescent Yacht Club (Detroit) add to the tally. Hoover Sailing Club also boasts Pan Am gold medals in Lightnings, as well as National Champions of Comet, Penguin, and Tartan Ten classes. Symposium presenter Greg Fisher grew up sailing in the area and will share his "go fast" tips, while his father George will be presenting ways for nonprofit organizations to maximize their 501(c) (3) status.
