Leading the sport of sailing for 110 years

US SAILING Awards Herreshoff Trophy to Past President Bob Hobbs

US SAILING awarded its prestigious Nathanael G. Herreshoff Trophy to Bob Hobbs for his outstanding contributions to the sport of sailing in the U.S. over many years. Hobbs was presented with the Trophy during an awards banquet last Friday at US SAILING’s Annual Meeting in Phoenix, AZ. To a standing ovation, Hobbs accepted the award.

Hobbs' involvement with US SAILING spans over three decades, during which he held various volunteer positions, including President (1991-'94), Olympic Sailing Committee Chairman (1996-2000), US Sailing Foundation President and Trustee, Chairman of the Inshore Committee, Training Committee member, and many more. As president, Hobbs clearly made it a priority to travel to countless events to represent the organization: during his three-year term, Hobbs spent a mere total of 13 weekends at home. It's not only Hobbs' extensive US SAILING involvement that has earned him this prestigious award.

US SAILOR of the Week - Dave Christensen

Dave Christensen

Most sailors out there probably day-dream about sailing in one way or another: cruising the islands, owning a bigger and faster boat, sailing across the globe, winning an Olympic medal, or something else. Dave Christensen of Phoenix, AZ, has a dream like that. He hopes to race from Vancouver to San Diego next year in a Mini Class boat he's building in his garage. And while he may be living in a desert region of the country, Dave is determined to prove that his dream is not too far-fetched. He learned to sail when he was 12 years old when his brother Mick took him out for a sail. Although Dave fell overboard on the first tack, he wasn't easily deterred...

National Race Management Trophy Awarded
to St. Petersburg YC

US SAILING awarded its prestigious trophy for excellence in race management to St. Petersburg Yacht Club of Florida. The name of the trophy, which US SAILING has been awarding since 1978, is called the St. Petersburg Yacht Club Trophy since the club donated it to US SAILING the previous year. This is, however, the first time for St. Petersburg Yacht Club to receive its namesake trophy. The Club was selected from a list of 13 nominated sailing organizations for outstanding organization and execution of the 2007 Winter Lightning Championship held last March in which 73 boats competed.

How Can Sailors Prevent "Super Bug" From Spreading?
You've probably heard stories in the national news in recent weeks about the "super bug," an infection resistant to many common antibiotics. What would you do if you're sailing offshore for two weeks and one of your crew members has brought the "super bug" on board unintentionally? With the close quarters in which people live on board sailboats, it could take less than two days for the entire crew to be sick. How can you prevent this from happening to you? The US SAILING Sports Medicine Committee, made up of a team of highly skilled doctors, has a few words of advice.

San Diego Yacht Club Team Wins U.S. Offshore Championship
After three days of intense racing on Chesapeake Bay where the leadership board changed several times, Chuck Nichols (San Diego, CA) led his team of San Diego Yacht Club to victory at the U.S. Offshore Championship last Sunday. Going into the final day, the top four teams were within five points of each other and anyone could have returned home the new U.S. Offshore Champion. But Nichols and his seven crew members (San Diegans Kyle Clark, Earl Terry, James Sakasegawa, Matthew Brown, Kelly McKeown, as well as John Reiter of Carlsbad, CA, and Bruce Buddenhagen of La Quinta, CA) were prepared and quick out of the gates for the day's first race to take a bullet.
