U.S. Olympic & Paralympic Team Trials – Sailing: 21 Athletes Win Team Trials and Prepare for Road Ahead to China
After a nine-day regatta that took place October 6-14 off Rhode Island's Aquidneck Island and in Southern Californian waters, winners in 11 classes were named to the U.S. Olympic and Paralympic Teams. US SAILING coordinated with six host organizations to hold these contests concurrently on East and West coasts, to select the sailors who will represent the United States at the 2008 Games.
The range of wind conditions during the Trials was wide: from East Coast weather that transitioned from summer temperatures to fall during the regatta, bringing light, fluky air balanced by blows of 18 knots and surfable seas; to West Coast weather that mixed days of little wind and battles in wet and wild conditions.
The diversity of new team members is also wide: from Tornado Olympic veterans John Lovell and Charlie Ogletree, who will sail their fourth Olympic Games; to 19-year-old Nancy Rios in the RS:X, making her first bid for Olympic glory. But for the 21 sailors who triumphed at the U.S. Olympic & Paralympic Team Trials – Sailing, this competition had a singular impact: winners earned their gateway to Olympic and Paralympic dreams; for all others, this regatta brought their medal aspirations for 2008 to an end.

After three years - or more for some - the winners of the U.S. Olympic & Paralympic Team Trials have earned their spot on the starting lines of the Olympic and Paralympic Regattas in China next year. A tremendous amount of effort has gone into each of these sailors' campaigns: spending lots of time on the water and in the gym, working the phones for fundraising, and traveling the globe competing in regattas against other world-class competitors. And now, for the next year or so, their efforts will only increase in order to beat the best of the best in Qingdao, China, next summer...

U.S. Championship of Champions Preview When racing starts at the U.S. Championship of Champions tomorrow (Thursday) at Mission Bay Yacht Club in San Diego, CA, the starting line will be packed with familiar names from across the country's one-design sailing community. This should be no surprise, the event - which wraps up on Saturday, October 20 - is known as one of the toughest one-design competitions since it brings together the country's top 19 one-design sailors of all ages who have won major events in their respective one-design classes in the last year.
This year's event is sailed in Snipes, which could make Augie Diaz, the 2003 US SAILING Rolex Yachtsman of the Year who has countless Snipe titles to his name, the odds-on favorite. But a win by Diaz is by no means guaranteed...

Yacht Club Survey Offers Unique Insight
What’s the average number of juniors in a Yacht Club sailing program? Read on. Results of a survey US SAILING conducted among yacht clubs has revealed interesting results. Gary Jobson called this study ‘historical’ when he first saw it and said that it was just good common sense to share this information among clubs. We hope that these survey results help similar organizations understand how common challenges are approached since the results offer a unique insight into “what the other clubs are doing” for their members.
Some of the answers won’t surprise anyone – Laser and Optimist fleets show up most frequently among the surveyed clubs’ one-design fleets, with the J/24 as the most popular keelboat fleet. But it might be interesting to know that club members are three times more likely to have access to a beach than to have access to rental/charter boats. Answer to juniors question above: 90.
