Trials_49er_WadlowRastTough Battles Ahead for Second Half of U.S. Olympic & Paralympic Team Trials – Sailing

It's only halftime at the U.S. Olympic & Paralympic Team Trials – Sailing, where 11 classes are battling for berths to the 2008 Games. Many classes are lethally close on the water and in the points scores, but there is a lot more racing to come in this 9-day contest being run concurrently in East and West coast locales. Almost all classes are enjoying a day of rest today. Only the Finns, the largest fleet with 42 boats, are sailing today.

On Tuesday, sailors on the East Coast grappled with shifty northeasterlies while the West Coast events enjoyed one of the windiest days so far in the regatta, which wraps up on Sunday when the highest eligible finishers will be nominated to the U.S. Olympic Committee for the U.S. Olympic or Paralympic Team - Sailing. No crew has yet taken a solid-enough lead to ensure a spot on the team—and there is a lot of action still to unfold that you can follow either on Gary Jobson's video reports, or in the photo galleries, or through the daily updates posted on the event website.

US SAILOR of the Week - Fred Meno

meno
Fred Meno

Fred Meno of Fort Worth, TX, is really hoping that three time's a charm. Next week he'll compete in his third U.S. Championship of Champions, as well as his third U.S. Championship this year. His results have steadily improved at each Championship, so he's hoping for the best this time around. Fred, who's actually Fred IV in his family, grew up in a sailing family in Detroit. His great-grandfather, Fred I, was a freighter boat captain on Lake Huron. His grandfather, Fred II, sailed all kinds of boats, as did his father, Fred III. In fact, his father competed in the first-ever U.S. Championship of Champions back in 1976. Fred IV is a true one-design sailor...

2008 US SAILING Rolex Miami OCR:
Half the Classes, Double the Intensity
Though it will have fewer classes for its 2008 edition, the US SAILING Rolex Miami OCR again will fulfill an annual promise to supply world-class racing to sailors eyeing the next Olympic and Paralympic Games. The event, scheduled for its 19th running January 27 to February 2, will deliver elite level competition in four of the Olympic classes (Laser, Laser Radial, Star, and Yngling) and all three Paralympic classes (2.4mR, SKUD-18, and Sonar) chosen for the 2008 Games in Qingdao, China. Racing will be eliminated, however, for another seven of the Olympic classes (49er, 470 Men & Women, Finn, Neil Pryde RS:X Men & Women, and Tornado) due to near-direct conflicts with their world championships held overseas.

Radar Reflector Study
In August of 2006, a racing sailboat was on its way to a regatta in the waters of the United Kingdom when apparently the sailboat collided with a ferry. Three crew on the sailboat died and the boat was not recovered. After an investigation, one of the potential faults cited was that the sailboat was not visible to all radars. The Marine Accident Investigation Branch in the United Kingdom commissioned a study on Radar Reflectors, which is now also available on the US SAILING website.
