RolexTrophyWebsiteUS SAILING Rolex Yachtsman and Yachtswoman of the Year Awards:
Nominations Now Accepted
With the change of seasons follows the opportunity to recognize those U.S. sailors who have collected impressive regatta results at home and abroad in 2007. Starting today, US SAILING is accepting nominations for its Rolex Yachtsman and Yachtswoman of the Year awards, widely acknowledged as the foremost individual sailing honors in the nation. Through November 30, 2007, every member of US SAILING may nominate the male and female sailor they think has turned in the most outstanding on-the-water performance during the 2007 calendar year.

US SAILING's Rolex Yachtsman and Yachtswoman of the Year Awards are presented annually to the individual U.S. sailors who demonstrate excellence on-the-water at national and/or international events to earn their place in the record books. Jud Smith and Paige Railey, winners of the prestigious distinction for 2006, were the most recent additions to the list of legendary winners that includes Betsy Alison, Kevin Burnham, Paul Cayard, Dennis Conner, Courtenay Dey, Paul Foerster, Steve Fossett, JJ Isler, John Kostecki, Ken Read, Dawn Riley, Jody Swanson and Ted Turner.

US SAILOR of the Week - Kate Gregory

Gregory
Kate Gregory

At age 19, Kate Gregory of Denver, CO, is a typical college student, running from class to class (she's a sophomore majoring in broadcast journalism and psychology) and enjoying a busy social life. But what keeps her occupied the most is being captain of the sailing team at Marquette University in Milwaukee, WI. This is her second season as captain and the team has already grown from 10 to about 35. But how does a girl from Colorado know how to sail?  "I'm unique," she says, "Not that many people sail in Colorado." Kate learned to sail at her grandparents' home near Lake Erie, where she visited every summer as a kid, but she never sailed back home in Colorado. That is, until a few years ago when she walked into a local West Marine store back home in Denver...

King Harbor Yacht Club Team - U.S. Match Racing Champions
The King Harbor Yacht Club team of Brian Angel (Manhattan Beach, CA), Payson Infelise (Newport Beach, CA) and Michael Delanty (Redondo Beach, CA) were crowned winners of the U.S. Match Racing Championship for the Prince of Wales Bowl last Sunday, after four days of racing in Sonars off Newport, RI. The Finals of this national championship—hosted by New York Yacht Club and sponsored by Rolex Watch U.S.A., Rosetta Stone and Dry Creek Vineyard—echoed the Final battle of last year's event: Angel once again faced Pequot Yacht Club skipper Dave Perry (Southport, CT), the same formidable sailor he faced in 2006. Last year, Perry and his crew triumphed; Angel found the battle this year to be tougher—but he also found his edge.

Enforcing One-Design Class Rules
How to enforce one-design class rules often seems to generate confusion and heat in a lot of classes. Class rules writers, class officers, competitors and protest committees all have thoughts on how enforcement of class rules should work. Too often, a class rules problem is a result of ignorance of the rules of the class, of an unclear rule or even of an unnecessary rule. We’ve seen cases in which unclear class rules and misconceptions about the roles that different bodies are authorized to play can lead to penalties and grievances. An interesting article from US SAILING's Class Management Handbook by Clark Chapin and Walter Chamberlain looks at several aspects of this often misunderstood subject.
