17 Ideas to Help Grow A One-Design Fleet -
by John Burnham

Cruising World editor John Burnham has been a passionate sailor and US SAILING volunteer for many years. Through the years, John has traveled the globe to participate in and/or write about sailing events. In other words, he knows a thing or two about sailing and about how to grow the sport of sailing.

A few years ago, John wrote an interesting article filled with 17 ideas to help a one-design fleet grow. We find that these ideas are still valid today. From organizing a post-race roast with the top 3 skippers of the day standing up in front of the fleet describing their successes to promoting family racing by organizing a husband/wife or parent/child championship.

US SAILOR of The Week - John Rousmaniere
John Rousmaniere began sailing as a kid in the late 1950s, racing Blue Jays every summer on Long Island Sound. As he grew up, so did the size of boats he liked to sail and he began sailing offshore. Aspiring to be a writer when he finished college, John followed the advice that you should write about what you know and got a job at Yachting Magazine. Now a freelance writer living in New York City, he doesn't own a boat but frequently crews, these days particularly enjoying racing classic yachts.

IllustratedDictionaryKnow Your Sailing Terms
In addition to being a passionate sailor, John Rousmaniere is also a highly respected author. He has written several books, some of which are available through the US SAILING store at a discount for US SAILING members. For example, Rousmaniere's Illustrated Dictionary of Sailing Terms, covers words from "abaft" to "zulu," clearly defining terms that today's sailors and powerboaters rely on to make their way safely and happily on the water. $19.50 for US SAILING members, $23.95 for non-members.

Seasickness Weeds Out Olympic Volunteer Hopefuls in China
Passengers in life jackets sit in yachts side by side, 300 meters away from the shore at the Qingdao Olympic sailing center in China on the water. They are not here for sightseeing, but for an anti-seasickness test organized by the Qingdao Olympic Sailing Committee, which is selecting eligible volunteers out of thousands of candidates. Along with the other 2008 Games volunteers, a few good qualified people are needed both in this year's sailing test events and aquatics competitions in late August.
