ENCOURAGING PARTICIPATION AND PROMOTING EXCELLENCE
IN SAILING
US SAILING'S ROLEX INTERNATIONAL WOMEN'S KEELBOAT CHAMPIONSHIP: NOTICE OF RACE NOW AVAILABLE The Notice of Race for the 12th running of US
SAILING’s Rolex International Women’s Keelboat Championship (Rolex IWKC) is
now available. This world-class event, one of the highest profile women’s
keelboat regattas in the world, will be held November 12-17, 2007 at Houston
Yacht Club in LaPorte, TX. In the past, competitors from Asia, Australia,
Europe, South Africa and New Zealand have participated alongside previous
champions such as Sally Barkow (Nashotah, WI), an Olympic hopeful and the
2005 Rolex Yachtswoman of the Year; JJ Isler (La Jolla, CA) a two-time
Olympic medalist and four-time Rolex Yachtswoman of the Year; and Betsy
Alison (Newport, RI), a five-time Rolex Yachtswoman of the Year. The Rolex IWKC is part of the US SAILING Adult National Championships program.
US SAILING AND THE ACTIVE NETWORK TO PROVIDE ONLINE EVENT MANAGEMENT
US SAILING and The Active Network, Inc. (Active), a leading provider of
application services technology and marketing access to community service
and participatory sports organizations, have announced a new joint effort to
deliver a new event registration and management system that will simplify
the online registration process for regattas, instructor training courses,
race administration classes and annual meetings. BUSY SPRING SCHEDULE AHEAD FOR US SAILING SAFETY AT SEA SEMINARS
With spring almost here, numerous sailors across the country are getting
ready for another fun and exciting spring and summer sailing season. For
sailors looking to compete in offshore regattas and/or planning an offshore
cruise, the US SAILING Safety at Sea Seminars presented by Cruising World
magazine help these sailors prepare for any safety-related issue they might
face. Sponsored by West Marine and Landfall Navigation, these Seminars cover
a wide range of topics, such as safe seamanship, heavy-weather tactics, and
boat preparation. DON'T PUT YOUR JUNIOR SAILING PROGRAM AT RISK
Junior sailing programs need the right insurance. Sailing instructors may
drive club-owned cars or their own cars to regattas. They pull trailers
packed with boats or tow a line of boats behind the coach boat. In some
cases, they drive sailors to regattas. The Burgee Program understands all
the risks of running a successful junior sailing program. EAST COAST YACHT CLUB SYMPOSIUM - APRIL 22-25
The New England Chapter of the Club Managers Association of America and US
SAILING have teamed up to host the first-ever 2007 East Coast Yacht Club
Symposium for yacht club managers at New York Yacht Club in Newport, RI,
from April 22-25. Learn more about dock & waterfront regulatory matters as
well as emergency and hurricane preparedness, and listen to keynote speaker
Gary Jobson. This is a tremendous opportunity for yacht club managers to
participate in educational sessions conducted by noted leaders in our
industry. Gowrie, Barden & Brett and Dry Creek Vineyard are among the
sponsors of the event. REGISTRATION OPENS FOR U.S. INDEPENDENCE CUP
Registration for the 2007 U.S. Independence Cup/North American Challenge Cup
opens on March 15th. In a change from previous years, the Freedom 20
division will be an invitational with sailors selected on sailing resumes (deadline
for resumes is May 1). The 2.4mR and Sonar classes will be open to all
competitors. Opportunities for IFDS classification will be available but
prior arrangements must be made by the competitor. Chicago Yacht Club and
event sponsors American Airlines and Hyatt Hotels are providing a limited
number of travel and lodging subsidies for those who register by May 15,
2007. The event is sponsored nationally by Rolex Watch U.S.A. and Dry Creek
Vineyard. NOT TO BE OVERLOOKED
As we prepare our sailing programs for this summer, it’s important to not
overlook a critical component of each and every one: the safety boats. They
require and deserve the same attention as the Optis, Lasers, and 420s in the
fleet. As such, be sure that all safety equipment is up to date and safely
stored onboard, that fuel tanks are cleaned of old fuel and fuel filters
have recently been replaced, that engines were properly winterized in the
fall, and any fiberglass repairs have been taken care of before splashing.
