US SAILOR Of The Week
Scott Diamond

Scott Diamond

Most of Scott Diamond’s sailing as a boy happened while vacationing with his parents in Mexico. The man responsible for keeping an eye on him would take one end of a 200-foot tow rope, run it up through the centerboard trunk of a Sunfish and tie it to the mast. Then he would anchor the other end of the rope out in the water. Scott was just 8 years old back then, having a great time tacking back and forth. Back home in Wilmette, IL, just north of Chicago, he sailed with his parents and did some crewing until he took an eight-year break to focus on gymnastics, eventually becoming NCAA Champion in 1989. His love for the sport of sailing brought him back to the waters of Lake Michigan after graduating from the University of Illinois. These days, he’s based at Chicago Yacht Club where he races his Vanguard 15 and serves on the Board of Directors as well as several committees. As a US SAILING certified Judge and Level 1 Instructor Trainer, Scott enjoys giving his time and energy to support other sailors, particularly the young ones.

BUSY SPRING SCHEDULE AHEAD FOR US SAILING SAFETY AT SEA SEMINARS

With spring almost here, numerous sailors across the country are getting ready for another fun and exciting spring and summer sailing season. For sailors looking to compete in offshore regattas and/or planning an offshore cruise, the US SAILING Safety at Sea Seminars presented by Cruising World magazine help these sailors prepare for any safety-related issue they might face. Sponsored by West Marine and Landfall Navigation, these Seminars cover a wide range of topics, such as safe seamanship, heavy-weather tactics, and boat preparation.
> Find out more about the US SAILING Safety at Sea Seminars and the calendar of upcoming Seminars by going to http://www.ussailing.org/safety/Seminars.

DON'T PUT YOUR JUNIOR SAILING PROGRAM AT RISK

Junior sailing programs need the right insurance. Sailing instructors may drive club-owned cars or their own cars to regattas. They pull trailers packed with boats or tow a line of boats behind the coach boat. In some cases, they drive sailors to regattas. The Burgee Program understands all the risks of running a successful junior sailing program.
> Learn more by going to http://www.gowrie.com or calling 1-800-262-8911 and ask for the Burgee Program by name. Broker inquiries are welcome. Program managed by Gowrie, Barden & Brett, proud partner of US SAILING.

NOT TO BE OVERLOOKED

As we prepare our sailing programs for this summer, it’s important to not overlook a critical component of each and every one: the safety boats. They require and deserve the same attention as the Optis, Lasers, and 420s in the fleet. As such, be sure that all safety equipment is up to date and safely stored onboard, that fuel tanks are cleaned of old fuel and fuel filters have recently been replaced, that engines were properly winterized in the fall, and any fiberglass repairs have been taken care of before splashing.
> US SAILING and RIBCRAFT recently announced the development of a 15-foot US SAILING RIBCRAFT RIB that comes equipped with a 40HP engine, configured to meet the requirements of sailing organizations and their on-the-water activities. Visit http://www.ribcraftusa.com/ussailing for more information.

LEARN ABOUT YOUR DIESEL ENGINE

Many motorboats and sailboats have a marine diesel engine. The Diesel Troubleshooter will help the owner keep this vital piece of equipment going. The 96-page paperback covers how it works, fuel, air, cooling, lubrication, electrics, installation, and much more. This second edition is fully revised and now covers turbochargers and long-distance voyaging (very demanding on engines).
> Visit http://store.ussailing.org now to order your copy of Diesel Troubleshooter. $16.50 for US SAILING members, $18.95 for non-members.
