SPERRY TOP-SIDER NOOD REGATTA KICKS OFF 2007 SEASON IN ST. PETE

While most of the country is preparing for a winter storm this week, over 1,500 sailors are headed to Florida for the Sperry Top-Sider National Offshore One Design (NOOD) Regatta, in St. Petersburg, FL, sanctioned by US SAILING. Scheduled for February 16-18 at host St. Petersburg Yacht Club, the regatta’s organizers are preparing for 200 teams spread across 19 one-design classes. Daily racing will take place on Tampa Bay under the guidance of Principal Race Officer (PRO) Peter “Luigi” Reggio, who also is known as the PRO for the America’s Cup. The 2006 defending overall champion, John Storck (Huntington, NY), will return to J/80 class competition with his Rumor. The largest class is the Melges 24 with 40 boats set to compete. The J/109 class will be an interesting fleet to keep track of with five of the seven boats coming straight from Key West Race Week.

US SAILOR Of The Week
John Dane

John Dane

If we wanted to sum up John Dane's accomplishments in the world of sailing, the list would be endless. He first entered the national sailing scene in 1967 after winning the U.S. Junior Triplehanded Championship and with it the Sears Cup, US SAILING's oldest trophy. With that win, this sailor who grew up on the waters off Southern Yacht Club in New Orleans, got his first real taste for sailing competition at the highest levels. Since then, he has competed in four U.S. Olympic Sailing Team Trials, each time narrowly missing the top spot. Don't expect the 56-year-old athlete to retire from the sport any time soon: he has just qualified for the number 1 spot on the 2007 US Sailing Team in the Star class with his son-in-law Austin Sperry as his crew. That's right: John is making another run for a spot on the U.S. Olympic Sailing Team. With 93 days of Star sailing on his schedule this year, he'll be busy competing in regattas worldwide. It's a good thing that Trinity Yachts, of which John is President and CEO, is currently busy catching up on a lot of new orders for the large motor yachts his company is famous for, giving John the time to compete while the boats are being built. Recently, John became a donor to the US SAILING Olympic medalist program supporting the entire US Sailing Team. Thank you John!

The event will be raced in Lasers, Laser Radials, Club 420s, and 29ers. Participants in the Youth Champs are selected by resume with no pre-determined fleet size. The highest eligible finishing team in the 29er fleet from each category (boys and girls) will represent the U.S. at the Volvo Youth Sailing ISAF World Championship, which will be held in Canada in mid-July.
