US SAILOR Of The Week
Sarah Herbelin

Sarah Herbelin

Having spent quite a few years sailing the waters of the Caribbean, Atlantic and Pacific, Sarah Herbelin has a pretty good amount of sailing experience. These days, Sarah shares her knowledge of sailing with numerous sailors as an instructor at the City of Oakland Office of Parks and Recreation's Lake Merritt Boating Center. One of her favorite things to teach is Celestial Navigation. "It's an ancient art that's still very relevant," says Sarah. "Global Positioning Systems have certainly made it easier for sailors but we should never rely on just one tool." What Sarah enjoys the most about sailing is that it connects sailors to the environment and to Sarah, nothing feels better than to take her students out on the water through the "Sailing Into Science" program she runs at Lake Merritt, and have the kids return the next day with their parents because they're so excited about what they learned. The successful program takes kids from local public schools to the boating center for 4 or 5 days where they learn about science and ecology in the mornings and go boating in the afternoons. "It's a lot of fun!" says Sarah.
