US SAILOR Of The Week
Joel Hanneman

Joel Hanneman

Joel Hanneman took his first sailing lesson at Houston Yacht Club when he was about 8 years old and he's been sailing ever since. While in high school, he was exposed to a new aspect of sailing: team racing. Like many of his peers, college summers were spent teaching sailing and racing when time allowed. After graduating from Tufts University in '04, the active team racing crowd in New England enabled him to continue sailing competitively. Two years ago, Joel turned his love for the sport into a career by becoming production engineer at Vanguard Sailboats, focusing on improving the manufacturing process of boats. Always looking to help grow the sport, Joel believes that there is a large untapped group of sailors, slightly older than the average team racing age of in the 20s, who might be interested in picking up team racing on keelboats. So Joel started a keelboat team racing program at Beverly Yacht Club. The program attracted a diverse group of new team racers and Joel hopes to expand it next summer. Joel is known as a quiet leader whose knowledge and dependability have made him a huge contributor to the local sailing scene and to team racing.

HOW TO USE THE CRUISING SPINNAKER

The cruising spinnaker is the one sail that greatly improves the performance of a cruising boat because it can add so much speed. On light air days, it provides the horsepower to keep a boat moving without resorting to the loud, smelly engine. In stronger winds, a cruising spinnaker turbo charges any boat. The Cruising Spinnaker A-Z teaches more than just how to jibe and trim the cruising spinnaker. Viewers learn handy tips on how two people can hoist and douse, what kind of sheets work best, what equipment is needed to use the sail, how to enlist the help of the wind in moving the sail across the boat during jibes, and much, much more.
> Visit http://store.ussailing.org now to order your copy of The Cruising Spinnaker A-Z. $17.50 for US SAILING members, $20.00 for non-members.
