US SAILING Rolex Yachtswoman of the Year Paige Railey

JUD SMITH AND PAIGE RAILEY ARE US SAILING'S 06 ROLEX YACHTSMAN & YACHTSWOMAN OF THE YEAR

Jud Smith (Marblehead, MA) and Paige Railey (Clearwater, FL) today were named, respectively, US SAILING’s 2006 Rolex Yachtsman and Yachtswoman of the Year.

Established in 1961 by US SAILING and sponsored by Rolex Watch U.S.A. since 1980, the Rolex Yachtsman and Yachtswoman of the Year Awards recognize outstanding on-the-water achievement in the calendar year just concluded. The winners will be honored and presented with specially engraved Rolex timepieces during a luncheon on March 2, 2007, at the New York Yacht Club in Manhattan.

Nominated for the first time, 2006 Rolex Yachtsman of the Year Jud Smith was recognized for his victory at the Audi Etchells World Championship in Australia. Since Paige Railey's first nomination in 2002, the 2006 Rolex Yachtswoman of the Year has been short-listed for this award five years in a row.

US SAILOR Of The Week
Jud Smith

Jud Smith

Jud Smith, the 2006 US SAILING Rolex Yachtsman of the Year, had a stellar year in 2006 with spectacular results, which is why he earned the country's most prestigious award for sailing. But it's not just his on-the-water results that make Jud such a terrific sailor, it's also his enthusiastic personality and passion for our sport. And his passion is contagious: as a sailmaker for Doyle Sailmakers, Jud has inspired countless sailors. He's known to always be willing to lend a hand or offer a bit of good advice, regardless of whether he's giving advice to a client or giving a fellow competitor the advantage. "The best feeling is to be beaten by someone I gave advice to," he says. For Jud, who grew up riding the coattails of his Gold Medalist father and several other sailing greats, the most important thing is to help sailors improve because he fears sailors may otherwise lose interest in the sport he loves so much. Jud is certainly setting a great example and leaving sailors with much to aspire to, on and off the race course. Congratulations Jud!

With numerous Olympic class sailors unloading containers and practicing on the waters of Biscayne Bay, it's clear that US SAILING's Rolex Miami OCR is about to kick off (racing will be held January 22-27). This weekend, the 470 and RS:X North Americans will be held, with a lot of Olympic hopefuls in attendance.

MORNING LIGHT CREW TAKES ISAF US SAILING OFFSHORE SAFETY COURSE

The Morning Light sailors who plan to be the youngest crew ever to sail the Transpacific Yacht Race in July were introduced last week to key elements of their quest: the boat and an ISAF US SAILING Offshore Safety Course. The crew is gearing up to compete in the Transpac Race, a race of 2,225 nautical miles from Los Angeles to Honolulu as part of Roy Disney's documentary film production. Last Wednesday through Friday, the crew learned the less glamorous but critical procedures from a team led by Chuck Hawley of West Marine, who has been conducting pre-race seminars for Transpac and other ocean races for years, along with ABN AMRO Navigator Stan Honey and North Sails' Fuzz Foster. "Part of what we want to accomplish is the safety-at-sea business of handling life rafts, man-overboard drills, CPR and emergency medical procedure," Roy Disney said.
