US SAILORS Of The Week
The Listwans

Blair and Christie Listwan

For many sailors in the northern part of the country, it's freezing out there and not many of us hit the water on our trusty boats this time of year. And when we're driving on any North-South highway in the U.S. and we see boats being trailered in the southbound lanes, we can't help but envy the owners. The Listwan family from Grosse Pointe Shores, MI, is one of the lucky ones. Dad Rick, mom Karen, and kids Christie and Blair are heading down to Florida next week so the kids can sail in the Orange Bowl, the largest USA Junior Olympic Sailing Festival. Right now, the boats the Listwans will be sailing are on their way down south on a van carrying a Laser, 3 Optis and 3 420s. The Listwans are a perfect example of what we call 'sailing fanatics.' Dad owns a J/105 and has competed in over 20 Port Huron to Mackinac races. Mom Karen still sails with dad Rick and also likes to focus on the kids' sailing activities. 16-year-old Christie crews on a Club 420, is a member of the high school sailing team, and is thinking about applying for the '07 Youth Champs. 13-year-old Blair loves his Opti and sails whenever he can. This is the second time the family is heading down south for the Orange Bowl and it's quickly becoming a new family holiday tradition. "We'll probably end up doing this until the kids are out of high school," says mom Karen. Have fun!

NEW AND IMPROVED SEARCH ENGINE FOR THE US SAILING WEBSITE

As many of you may know, the US SAILING website is a great source for all kind of information about sailing nationwide. To make it easier for users to find the resources they need more quickly and accurately, US SAILING has updated the website search engine. The new search engine is based on Google’s core search technology which not only searches web pages, but also searches the content in Acrobat PDFs, Word and Excel documents throughout the website.
> The new search engine is easily accessible by going to http://www.ussailing.org  and using the search box in the top right hand corner.

IS YOUR CLUB TRANSITIONING TO A NEW GROUP OF CLUB OFFICERS?

The last few months of the year often are transitional times for club officers and management. New flag officers take on their duties and managers shift focus to winter operations. Use the opportunity to review your insurance protection. Get familiar with your insurance coverages and limits of liability and contact your agent with any questions. Clubs participating in US SAILING’s Burgee program underwritten by Chubb and managed by Gowrie Barden and Brett have the leading insurance protection in the field. With many types of policies available, no incoming slate of flag officers or club managers need to worry about their club's protection. Across the U.S., the best clubs protect their assets, their officers and managers with the Burgee program.

CAN PILOTING A BOAT REALLY BE THIS EASY?

Traditional navigation with its chart plotting, compass errors, and current vectors can take years to master. Serious boaters learn it eventually, but with $100 GPS receivers offering 50-foot position accuracy anywhere in the world, it’s no longer necessary to master the art before enjoying the sport. The Weekend Navigator is one of the first books to recognize that affordable, simple-to-use electronics demand a radically new approach to teaching navigation. Author Bob Sweet lets you find your way on the water immediately. This innovative guide’s quick-reference format shows you how to pinpoint locations at all times, determine the precise ranges and bearings of destinations, and much more.
> Visit http://store.ussailing.org now to order your copy of The Weekend Navigator. $19.50 for US SAILING members, $22.95 for non-members.

RESCUE MEDAL AWARDED TO SAILORS AFTER LAKE MICHIGAN INCIDENT

When Craig Warner slipped, slid down the deck and went overboard into Lake Michigan from the J/105 Sealark, his fellow crew was quick to pull him back out the water. The incident occurred last August during a race held out of Chicago Corinthian Yacht Club in winds of 15-20 knots and a chop of three to four feet, with an air temperature of in the 70s and water temperature of 70 degrees. Having recently practiced for a man overboard situation in preparation for the Chicago to Mackinac Island Race, the crew used the Quickstop maneuver to rescue Warner. For their effective lookout and quick action, Clark Pellet, Steve Hamming, Ned Sher and Shane Montgomery recently were awarded US SAILING's Arthur B. Hanson Rescue Medal.
