President Jim Capron

US SAILING ELECTS JIM CAPRON AS NEW PRESIDENT

The Board of Directors of US SAILING has elected Jim Capron of Annapolis, MD, as the organization’s new president. Immediate past president Janet Baxter (Chicago, IL) passed the helm to Capron at the organization’s annual meeting in Newport last Sunday. Capron has been involved with US SAILING in many capacities over the years. He has served on the organization’s Board of Directors since 2001, most recently as a Vice President. He has also been a member of numerous committees, including the Appeals, Judges, Race Administration, and Olympic Sailing Committees. In addition, Capron is a US SAILING Senior Judge and Umpire as well as an International Judge and Umpire certified by the International Sailing Federation (ISAF). As an official, he has served as a judge or umpire at many international events, including the Olympic Games, Louis Vuitton Cup, Volvo Ocean Race, and the ISAF World Sailing Games.

US SAILOR Of The Week
Janet Baxter

Janet Baxter

If you haven't had the opportunity yet to meet Janet Baxter, you've been missing out on a chance to get to know one of the most passionate sailors out there. During the last three years, while she was president of US SAILING, Janet has traveled to sailing events and organizations around the world, and especially the U.S., to promote and support our sport. At the drop of a hat, she could be called upon to travel to any part of the country to meet local sailors and sailors-to-be. While she has accomplished many major US SAILING projects during her three years at the helm, one of the most challenging has been the restructure of the organization. And whenever she had the opportunity, Janet would go out on the water. That's right, this Chicago native knows a thing or two about sailing, having competed in the popular Chicago-Mackinac race 30 times. Janet followed in the footsteps of her father, a recipient of US SAILING's Herreshoff trophy. Over the years, she's been involved in the organization at many levels. During US SAILING's Annual Meeting last weekend, when she was getting ready to hand the reins over to Jim Capron, she could frequently be overheard saying that, while she was eager for more free time, this wasn't going to be the last time we'd see her or hear from her. And we certainly look forward to her staying involved, her enthusiasm and zeal are contagious.

US SAILING ELECTS NEW BOARD OF DIRECTORS

US SAILING has announced the nine newly elected members of its Board of Directors. The new Board members were elected by the organization’s members after a two-month voting period. This is the first time in US SAILING’s history that the organization held member elections for its Board of Directors. Members of US SAILING’s Board of Directors serve for a three-year term in rotation. Since this marks the first time the organization has held a Board election and to prevent that all Board members’ terms will end in the same year, the length of the elected Board members’ terms varies. The newly elected Board members and the length of their terms are: for a one-year term: Dick Allsopp, Susan Epstein, and Jim Tichenor; for a two-year term: Amy Gross-Kehoe, Chip Johns, Bill Stump; for a three-year term: Tom Hubbell, Patty Lawrence, and Jerome Montgomery. These members now join Olympic Sailing Committee Chairman Dean Brenner, President Jim Capron, and Executive Director Charlie Leighton, as well as Treasurer Leslie Keller and Secretary Fred Hagedorn on the Board of Directors.

HERRESHOFF TROPHY PRESENTED TO SUSIE TROTMAN

US SAILING has awarded its Nathanael G. Herreshoff Trophy to Susie Trotman (Syosset, NY) for her outstanding contribution to the sport of sailing in the U.S. Trotman was presented with the Trophy, US SAILING’s most prestigious award, at US SAILING’s Annual Meeting in Newport, RI, last Saturday. To a standing ovation, Trotman accepted the award. Susie Trotman has played a major role in the development of the national certification program for sailing instructors when the small boat program was first created in the early 1980s. She was instrumental in the cultivation of US SAILING’s Training Department and Training’s Small Boat Instructor Training and Certification Program. Beyond Trotman’s various levels of involvement with US SAILING, she has been a pillar of one the most successful junior sail training programs, the Junior Sailing Association of Long Island Sound.

NUMEROUS SAILORS ATTEND VOLVO OCEAN RACE PANEL AT US SAILING MEETING

The usual discussions in meeting rooms and hallways at US SAILING's Annual Meetings came to a grinding halt last Friday when over 200 sailors got the opportunity to hear from four experts about the Volvo Ocean Race. The Volvo Ocean Race panel, moderated by Gary Jobson, featured Stan Honey, navigator on the winning team of ABN AMRO One; Ken Read, helmsman and tactician for Ericsson Racing Team; Jerry Kirby, bowman for Pirates of the Caribbean; and Jennifer Lilly, the official weather forecaster for the Volvo Ocean Race. The room was riveted as the sailors talked about their experiences during the 7-month intense ocean race, including the scariest moments, food, on-board comfort (or the lack thereof), marine life, weather forecasting, and much more.

The Trophy was presented to Commodore Steve Hastings, Teri Ficken, Regatta Chairman and Mark Foster, Principal Race Officer of Corpus Christi Yacht Club, by US SAILING’s Race Management Committee Chair Jim Tichenor last Saturday at US SAILING’s Annual Meeting in Newport, RI. URBAN MIYARES RECEIVES TROPHY FOR CONTRIBUTION TO DISABLED SAILING

Urban Miyares (San Diego, CA) was presented with US SAILING's Gay S. Lynn Memorial Trophy for his outstanding contribution to disabled sailors and the sport of disabled sailing last Saturday. Miyares, a blind sailor who has skippered two Transpac races and numerous Newport-Ensenada races, is the founder and CEO of Challenged America, an organization focused on providing free sailing opportunities for children and adults with disabilities. In addition to running a successful disabled sailing program, Miyares' athletic abilities aren’t limited to sailing: in the 1990-1991 season, he was the U.S. Alpine Ski Champion and ranked as the fastest blind skier in the world. Always looking for new challenges, Miyares is hoping to sail singlehandedly around the world one day.
