Dave Perry hits the water celebrating his team's win at the U.S. Match Racing Championship

DAVE PERRY TAKES HOME SECOND U.S. MATCH RACING CHAMPIONSHIP TITLE AFTER TIGHT FINALS

It all came down the final race on the final day of the U.S. Match Racing Championship on Saturday, hosted by Fort Worth Boat Club. A face-off between the team representing Pequot Yacht Club led by Dave Perry and the team led by defending champion Brian Angel representing King Harbor Yacht Club went to the max, as the best out of 5 series went to 2-2. In the deciding race, Dave Perry and his crew Terry Flynn and Chris Museler came out ahead of Brian Angel and his crew Michael Delanty and Payson Infelise to take home the title. This marked Dave Perry’s second U.S. Match Racing Championship title, after previously winning it in 1982 (when he represented Yale Corinthian Yacht Club).

US SAILOR Of The Week
Lee Parks

Lee Parks

Lee Parks' job title at US SAILING is Inshore Director, a title which she has proudly held for 21 years. But in reality, her job responsibilities are much more than that. One of the many hats she wears is that of the unofficial historian, the "go to" person when you need background information on US SAILING or sailing in general. For example, if you're wondering what type of boat you've discovered in your great-grandfather's summer cottage, she'll get you the answer. But perhaps what we're most proud of right now is that our very own Lee was the highest finishing female sailor at last week's Sunfish World Championship, making her the unofficial Women's World Sunfish Champion. If Lee could, she'd live on her Sunfish. In fact, her entire home in Newport is filled with Sunfish memorabilia. She first began sailing her Sunfish when she was 8 years old living on a lake on Cape Cod, MA, and while she has sailed on numerous other boats over the years, has always remained loyal to her little Sunfish. We're proud to have her as a member of our team at US SAILING!

US SAILING PRE-TRIALS AND PAN AM GAMES TRIALS HAPPENING THIS WEEKEND

The US SAILING Pre-Trials for six Olympic and Paralympic classes will be taking place this weekend in Newport, RI, and in San Diego, CA. The following classes will be racing in Newport, RI (hosted by the Rhode Island Sailing Foundation), through Sunday: Laser, Laser Radial, 2.4mR, SKUD-18, and Sonar. The Laser and Laser Radial Pre-Trials will also serve as trials to select competitors for the 2007 U.S. Pan American Games Team.  The Tornado class will be racing through Sunday out of San Diego Yacht Club. LEARN MORE ABOUT CELESTIAL NAVIGATION

There is deep mystery and profound satisfaction in finding your position on earth by reference to the sun, moon and stars--not to mention profound relief when the GPS receiver stops working in mid-passage. That is why knowledge of celestial navigation is still a rite of initiation, and its practice still a favorite pastime among serious cruisers. Celestial Navigation for Yachtsmen successfully teaches sailors who have been demoralized by bigger books. It remains "the famous little book" on celestial navigation.
> Get the Celestial Navigation for Yachtsmen through the US SAILING store at http://store.ussailing.org. $9.95 for US SAILING members, $12.95 for non-members.

CONSISTENCY PAYS OFF FOR ROBERT HOBBS AT U.S. OFFSHORE CHAMPIONSHIP

With just ten points after five races at the U.S. Offshore Championship, sailed at Long Beach Yacht Club on Catalina 37s, Robert Hobbs (Tampa, FL) and his team from Davis Island Yacht Club won the regatta and the Lloyd Phoenix Trophy last Sunday. This marks the first time in the 21-year history of the Championship that a team from Florida won the event. Led by Robert Hobbs, the team consisted of James Traun, Mike Gable, Cory Thompson, Alan Thompson, Josh Wilus and Cameron Salmon.
