Ideal conditions on the final day of the U.S. Team Racing Championship made for exciting racing

SILVER PANDA SAILS TO VICTORY AT  U.S. TEAM RACING CHAMPIONSHIP

After three days of thrilling racing at San Diego Yacht Club at the U.S. Team Racing Championship for US SAILING's Hinman Trophy, the event wrapped up on Sunday with a convincing win by Team Silver Panda. Silver Panda, having won the event before in 2002 but sailing with slightly different crew, led the way on Sunday by winning every race. Before getting on the water on Sunday-morning, Amanda Callahan of Silver Panda said "The conditions are great here, ideal actually. They're perfect for team racing." And that certainly turned out to be true for Silver Panda, which started its day by defeating Team Adirondack in the quarter final (2-0), then faced arch rivals Cape Cod WHishbone in the semis, dismissing them with a 3-0 win before defeating the team from Larchmont Yacht Club with another 3-0 win.

US SAILOR Of The Week
Maegan Ruhlman

Maegan Ruhlman

When not studying for classes at the College of Charleston, Maegan Ruhlman can be found on the water because that's practically where she grew up with her sailing family. Maegan certainly managed to stay busy sailing while enjoying her summer break: she taught sailing at Edgewater Yacht Club in Cleveland, competed in various regattas in her Lightning, and somehow also found time to coach a racing camp at Pymatuning Yacht Club in Pennsylvania, where she learned to sail years ago. Her on-the-water results in the Lightning class have been equally impressive: she finished second at the Women's Lightning North American Championship and a week later became the only female skipper to qualify for the Championship Fleet at the Lightning North Americans. Not bad for only being 21! But it's not just about results for Maegan. What she loves most about sailing is "the opportunities it gives me; the opportunity to experience new things, see new places, learn new skills and refine old ones, meet new people, and stay connected with old friends."
