ENCOURAGING PARTICIPATION AND PROMOTING EXCELLENCE
IN SAILING
MAKE SURE YOUR SAILING ORGANIZATION IS PREPARED FOR A HURRICANE Do you know what the difference is between a
hurricane watch and a hurricane warning? We're currently in the midst of hurricane
season, which runs from June 1 to November 30. US SAILING and its insurance
partners Gowrie, Barden & Brett and Chubb Group of Insurance Companies would
like to advise sailing organizations to be prepared for a hurricane. Sailing
organizations can help to mitigate their loss in the event of a major
catastrophe by having prepared a disaster plan that is updated and tested
regularly. SALLY BARKOW NAMED FINALIST FOR SPORTSWOMAN OF THE YEAR AWARD The Women’s Sports Foundation has named US
Sailing Team member Sally Barkow
(Chenequa, WI) as a finalist for the 2006 Sportswoman of the Year Award in
the team sport category. Each year, the Women’s Sports Foundation honors two
exceptional athletes — one individual and one team sport athlete — for
extraordinary performances. Previous recipients of this award include Chris
Evert, Mia Hamm, Sarah Hughes, Jackie Joyner-Kersee, Michelle Kwan, Martina
Navratilova, Serena and Venus Williams. US SAILING TEAM OFF TO IMPRESSIVE START IN QINGDAO, CHINA Sailing is underway at the 2006 Qingdao
International Regatta, and the US Sailing Team (USST) is off to an
impressive start despite challenging conditions. Stu McNay and Graham Biehl
are currently in first place in the 470 Men class after four races, while
other USST members hold on to second: Paige Railey in the Laser Radial
(after four races), George Szabo and Eric Monroe in the Star (four races)
and John Lovell and Charlie Ogletree in the Tornado class (three races). The
first of two annual Olympic Test Events in Qingdao, China, this regatta
gives sailors the opportunity to test the conditions, venue and competition
for the 2008 Olympic Games. The eleven Olympic events are being rotated
through the four courses, with eight events scheduled to race on any one
day. CHUBB U.S. JUNIOR SAILING CHAMPIONS CROWNED
Summer is always a busy time for junior sailors, especially since many of
them are competing in qualifying events for US SAILING's Chubb U.S. Junior
Sailing Championships with the best of them moving on to the finals. The
Chubb U.S. Junior Sailing Championships, which consist of the Single-,
Double- and Triplehanded Championships, were held earlier this month and
culminated in the announcement of several new national junior sailing
champions. The U.S. Single- and Doublehanded Championships, sponsored by
Chubb and Vanguard Sailboats, were held at Texas Corinthian Yacht Club and
were won by Charlie Buckingham (Newport
Beach, CA) and Alan Palmer and Katherine Gullick
representing Portland Yacht Club in Maine, respectively. Meanwhile, at
Bayview Yacht Club in Detroit, Fred Strammer
won his second U.S. Junior Triplehanded Championship (also sponsored by
Chubb), this time with Katrina Salk and Zeke
Horowitz, all representing Florida Oceanic Racing. US SAILING TEAM MEMBER ROGACHENKO WINS LASER RADIAL YOUTH WORLDS US Sailing Team member Kyle Rogachenko
(Collegeville, PA) became the first American to win the Laser Radial Youth
World Championships in the boys’ Gold fleet earlier this month. Rogachenko
was part of the US Laser Radial Youth World Team, a five-person team of top
youth sailors sent to the event by US SAILING and Vanguard Sailboats.
Rogachenko, 18, who finished eighth at last year’s Laser Radial Youth World
Championship in Brazil, called his win “amazing.” He said his goal was
originally to finish in the top five, so when he realized he was in the
running to win the regatta after the first few days, he was surprised. “It
feels like all the sailing and training I do is paying off,” he added. THE ULTIMATE STANDARDS IN SAILING EDUCATION - AVAILABLE IN A SET
KAREN MITCHELL WINS FOURTH U.S. INDEPENDENCE CUP TITLE Karen Mitchell (Deerfield Beach, FL) sailing with
Michael Grimm (Miami Beach, FL) has won her fourth consecutive U.S.
Independence Cup/North American Challenge Cup sailing in the Freedom
Independence class. Mitchell is campaigning to represent the U.S. at the
2008 Paralympic Games in the new doublehanded SKUD18 class. This
Championship is “most definitely a great way to prepare,” said Mitchell. “My
philosophy is to get in as many boats as you can, as often as you can.” US SAILING'S MENDELBLATT/STRUBE WIN STAR EUROPEANS Mark Mendelblatt (St. Petersburg, FL) and Mark
Strube (West Palm Beach, FL), recently won a gold medal at the 2006 Star
European Championship, part of Rolex Baltic Week in Neustadt, Germany. In an
unprecedented performance at a major Star championship, Mendelblatt and
Strube scored three consecutive bullets in the first three races and
finished with only 10 points, a 15 point lead over three-time Laser Olympic
medalist Robert Scheidt and crew Bruno Prada of Brazil. US Sailing Team
members Andy Horton (Newport, RI) and Brad Nichol (Lake Sunapee, NH) claimed
the bronze medal, at only two points behind the Brazilian team. DO YOU KNOW A US SAILOR OF THE WEEK? Who is the most passionate sailor you know? Who is
always on the water, taking every rules quiz or searching for that perfect
cruising lunch spot? Or do you know someone who is
newly converted to the sport and soaking up information like a sponge? How
about a junior sailor whom you have to command to "please step away from the
dinghy." Do you know someone who gives as much time and energy to building a
fleet or running races as they do to working at the office? We want to know
about them! MITCH HALL WINS U.S. SINGLEHANDED CHAMPIONSHIP It all came down to the final day of racing last
Sunday at the U.S. Singlehanded Championship to determine this year’s
national champion. At the start of Sunday's racing, Mitch Hall (Seminole,
FL) and Michael Karas (Kirkland, WA) were locked in a battle for first
place, with Karas in the lead by just two points. Nipping at their heels
were Benjamin Richardson (Gloucester, MA) and Chris Branning (Sarasota, FL).
In the final race, the lead changed several times, but in the end, Mitch
Hall's second place finish in that race earned him the National Championship
title and US SAILING's George O'Day Trophy.
