Some of the country's best youth Laser sailors
at the 2005 U.S. Singlehanded Championship

BATTLE BEGINS FOR U.S. JUNIOR SINGLE- AND DOUBLEHANDED CHAMPIONSHIP TITLES

Kemah, TX - For many youth sailors from across the country, it all comes down to this: after months of training and competing in qualifying regattas, the best youth sailors in the country are getting a chance to win a National Championship title at the U.S. Junior Singlehanded and Doublehanded Championships, which started today and will run through this weekend at Texas Corinthian Yacht Club.
Many familiar faces will be competing in the two events, which are part of US SAILING's Chubb U.S. Junior Championships. One of them is Cam Cullman (Rye, NY), winner of last year’s U.S. Junior Singlehanded Championship. The 17-year-old sailor elected to compete in the event to defend his title even though he qualified for the US Laser Radial Youth World Team to compete in the Laser Radial Youth World Championship, held simultaneously in California. A total of 60 competitors will be sailing in the U.S. Junior Single- and Doublehanded Championships, sponsored by Vanguard Sailboats. The events are part of US SAILING’s Chubb U.S. Junior Championships, which also includes the U.S. Junior Triplehanded Championship.

US SAILOR Of The Week
Brian Skeels

Brian Skeels

For most sailors out there, there’s a parent or a spouse supporting them on and/or off the water. Some spouses are just happy to have a day or weekend alone, while others come along and provide support, no matter if it’s on the docks, on the water, or both. For Brian Skeels, there’s no doubt about it: if he and his wife can find childcare for their 18-month-old daughter Ellie, he’ll be out on the water to support and cheer for his wife, Sarah Everhart-Skeels. Brian, a rehabilitation engineer by trade, is a PHRF sailor himself, usually sailing his Sonar named Overwhelmed on the waters near Jamestown, RI. But these days he spends most of his time watching his wife Sarah compete and providing on-the-water support. “It’s almost like backseat driving,” Brian says jokingly about watching his wife race. “Sometimes I ask her after a race why she made a certain move.” Brian, Sarah, and Ellie can be found in Newport, RI, later this month as Sarah competes for a spot on the US Disabled Sailing Team in the new doublehanded SKUD18.
