An impressive fleet battles for the
national championship title in La Porte, TX

U.S. JUNIOR WOMEN'S SINGLEHANDED CHAMPIONSHIP IN FULL SWING

La Porte, TX - The truth is that any young female sailor could win the U.S. Junior Women's Singlehanded Championship, taking place right now at Houston Yacht Club. Out of a fleet of 56 strong competitors, many of their names and accomplishments are known to the country's best coaches and instructors. Take for example Sarah Lihan (Ft. Lauderdale, FL): at age 17, she's the youngest female athlete on the '06 US Sailing Team. Defending champion Stephanie Roble (East Troy, WI) just returned to the U.S. last weekend after competing in the Volvo Youth Sailing ISAF World Championship (where she finished 24th in a very strong fleet). And this was just to name two. Predictions are that the lead in this event can fluctuate every race because the competition is so tight.

US SAILOR Of The Week
Sophie Fraser

Sophie Fraser

As a 14-year-old sailor who has just outgrown her trusted Opti this summer, Sophie Fraser is going through a transition that many young sailors experience. With so many types of boats out there, which one should succeed the Opti? For Sophie, the transition seems to be going well: she switched to a Laser Radial just three weeks ago, right after moving from Mandeville, LA, to Houston, TX. According to her dad, the Opti gave Sophie confidence on the water. Now that she's sailing a bigger and slightly more complex boat, the Laser Radial is bringing her up to a new level of confidence. Not that she really needed that extra confidence though: she grew up on the water sailing with her dad who would let her stand watch at the wheel while he'd make the sandwiches, so she knows what she's doing. Sophie is working hard to quickly gain more experience in the Laser Radial: she's already competing in her first national championship this week, the U.S. Junior Women's Singlehanded Championship (in 43rd place after day one). Good luck, Sophie!

FIND OUT MORE ABOUT SPORTS MEDICINE AND SAILING

With more and more sailors of all levels becoming interested in sailing-related injuries and prevention and other sailing sports medicine issues, researchers have seen an increase in the number of studies in this field over the last 15 years. From sailing injury prevention, fitness & training techniques, physiology & psychology to hydration & nutrition, there is now a lot of beneficial information available to sailors. A comprehensive article on sports medicine in sailing was recently published in the July issue of the British Journal of Sports Medicine. Dr. Anne Allen – an avid sailor and sports medicine physician, as well as a member of US SAILING's Performance Enhancement Team for the US Sailing Team - along with Dr. Marc De Jong - also a sailor and noted sports medicine specialist - reviewed and compiled the information from an extensive list of articles.
