U.S. Junior Women's Doublehanded Champions
Amanda Johnson and Ellie O'Brien

SOLID WIN FOR JOHNSON/O'BRIEN AT U.S. JUNIOR WOMEN'S DOUBLEHANDED CHAMPIONSHIP

Milwaukee, WI – After an impressive and consistent showing, Amanda Johnson (Berwyn, PA) and Ellie O'Brien (Westfield, NJ) won US SAILING’s U.S. Junior Women’s Doublehanded Championship on Monday. The two young sailors, who sail out of New Jersey, showed up at the National Championship well-prepared, optimistic, and eager. Their experience and positive attitude paid off well: they took the lead on the first day of racing and never gave it up. Sailed in Club 420s, the U.S. Junior Women’s Doublehanded Championship is sponsored by Vanguard Sailboats and was hosted by Milwaukee Yacht Club, who stepped up to the plate earlier this year after Lake Pontchartrain Yacht Club in New Orleans needed more time to recover from Hurricane Katrina.

US SAILOR Of The Week
Sue Hogan

Sue Hogan

As hundreds of boats show up on the starting line of next week's Chicago's Race to Mackinac (the "Mac"), be on the lookout for Sue Hogan on her Beneteau 36.7 As You Wish. This long-time sailor, who finished third at the Chicago NOOD last month, knows what she's doing, even though she hasn't owned her Beneteau for very long. Sue, who lives in Chicago, started sailing in high school in Ohio when she worked at a marina. But like so many sailors, she didn't have much time for sailing in college and a few years after that. Then, a friend bought a J/24 and she learned to make time. And just two years ago, while visiting Strictly Sail Chicago, Sue became a boat owner once again. This will be Sue's second "Mac" and she hopes there’ll be many more. Once the sailing bug bites, you might take vacations from the sport, but it never leaves you. Sail fast, Sue!

GETTING TO KNOW US SAILING TEAM-MEMBER ZACH RAILEY

US Sailing Team-member Zach Railey (Clearwater, FL) is currently racing in the Finn Gold Cup in Split, Croatia, where he is the first athlete to launch a new US SAILING multimedia feature: exclusive audio reports from regattas around the world. We checked in with Zach, 22, as he races his way across Europe and China this summer. His ultimate goal? Winning a medal at the 2008 Olympic Games in Qingdao, China.
Interview Excerpt: Do you have any mentors or role models?
"I look up to my sister, Paige, quite a lot. [Paige, 19, is ranked the number one Laser Radial sailor in the world by the International Sailing Federation.] What she has accomplished is really amazing, and I am positive that she will continue to amaze us in the future. Many times, it's just the two of us out sailing alone or at the gym on a Friday night. She is one of the very few people in the world who really understands what I go through because she does the same thing. We have a great relationship, and we help each other to get better every day."

CENTENNIAL NEWPORT TO BERMUDA RACE A SUCCESS

We often get positive feedback from sailors and we thought we'd share this one with our readers: "I'm writing to express a sincere thank you to US SAILING and in particular your Offshore office. As you know, we just completed our Centennial Newport to Bermuda Race which was an overwhelming success. With over 260 competitors we exceeded our previous participation by over 70 boats. The success of our event was in no small way due to the hard work of your Offshore office who had to provide rating certificates for every boat and in most cases two certificates for our dual scoring under ORR and IRC. ... On behalf of the Cruising Club of America, thank you for helping to make our Centennial Race a huge success." Signed by Edward S. Rowland, Commodore, Cruising Club of America.
