ENCOURAGING PARTICIPATION AND PROMOTING EXCELLENCE
IN SAILING
ELIMINATIONS TO BE HELD FOR U.S. MEN'S SAILING CHAMPIONSHIP US SAILING's U.S. Men's Championship, also known as
the Mallory Cup for the trophy presented to the winner, has a long history
in the sport of sailing. The event was created in 1952, modeled after
successful youth and women's national ladder (qualifying) systems. The event
quickly became very popular with 20 of the 23 district associations
competing in the inaugural Championship, won by Cornelius Shields of the
Larchmont Yacht Club. The next year, the regulations were relaxed to permit
female members in the crew but not at the helm. Over the years, the Clifford
D. Mallory Trophy has been in the hands of many, including several Olympic
medalists. Last year, Zak Fanberg was the first person since Buddy Melges to
have won the championship three times in a row (Melges won the event from
1959-'61).

Organizers of US SAILING’s Rolex International Women’s Keelboat Championship
have announced that Houston Yacht Club (HYC), in La Porte, Texas, will host
the next regatta from November 12-17, 2007. Held biennially as part of US
SAILING’s adult championship schedule, the event provides women sailors of
all ability levels with high-quality racing and an opportunity to compete
against top national and international sailors, while providing skills
development and mentoring to young women through the Rolex Next Step
program. DO YOU KNOW A US SAILOR OF THE WEEK? Who is the most passionate sailor you know? Who is
always on the water, taking every rules quiz or searching for that perfect
cruising lunch spot? Or do you know someone who is
newly converted to the sport and soaking up information like a sponge? How
about a junior sailor whom you have to command to "please step away from the
dinghy." Do you know someone who gives as much time and energy to building a
fleet or running races as they do to working at the office? We want to know
about them!
