ELIMINATIONS TO BE HELD FOR U.S. MEN'S SAILING CHAMPIONSHIP

US SAILING's U.S. Men's Championship, also known as the Mallory Cup for the trophy presented to the winner, has a long history in the sport of sailing. The event was created in 1952, modeled after successful youth and women's national ladder (qualifying) systems. The event quickly became very popular with 20 of the 23 district associations competing in the inaugural Championship, won by Cornelius Shields of the Larchmont Yacht Club. The next year, the regulations were relaxed to permit female members in the crew but not at the helm. Over the years, the Clifford D. Mallory Trophy has been in the hands of many, including several Olympic medalists. Last year, Zak Fanberg was the first person since Buddy Melges to have won the championship three times in a row (Melges won the event from 1959-'61).
> In 2006, the U.S. Men's Sailing Championship will be sailed in Sonars from September 19 -23 at Boston Yacht Club, MA. Become part of sailing history by participating in the U.S. Men’s Sailing Championship, sponsored by Rolex Watch U.S.A. and Dry Creek Vineyard. US SAILOR Of The Week
Edgar Cato

Edgar Cato

If you’re a regular at big boat and one-design regattas, Edgar Cato and his various Hissars are most likely familiar to you. You’ve seen them, and probably congratulated them, at Key West, Newport-Bermuda, Antigua, Swan regattas and after winning the 2005 12-Meter World Championship. A long-time member of US SAILING, Edgar (from the Carolinas) is well-known and respected by the organization's Offshore department. A recent Bronze Medalist donation to the US Sailing Team has added his name to an impressive list of supporters of the US Sailing Team. Edgar’s support of sailing parallels his wide-ranging interest in our sport including America’s Cup campaigns, the restoration of classic yachts, a recent gift to create an endowment for the sailing team at the College of Charleston and now, his essential and early backing of our US Sailing Team for success in China in 2008. Thank you Edgar!
