NATIONAL YOUTH SAILING CHAMPIONS DETERMINED IN FINAL RACE

The wind finally came in today, the last day of racing at US SAILING’s 2006 U.S. Youth Sailing Championship, sponsored by Vanguard Sailboats and Nautica and hosted by Grosse Pointe Yacht Club. After losing the second day of racing to a lack of wind, the weather looked promising this morning as the sailors prepared to get on the water. The top teams in each fleet sailed a remarkably consistent regatta, so the outcome was by no means assured for anyone. The competition was fierce throughout the regatta among the 150 sailors who were selected by sailing resume from a list of more than 300 applicants.

US SAILOR Of The Week
Charlie Field

Charlie Field

Meet Charlie Field. On the surface, he looks like a regular teenager enjoying a care-free life. But in reality, this 18-year-old from Honolulu, Hawaii, is all business. He's got a responsibility that many of his non-sailing friends may not have: as a Small Boat Level 1 Instructor, Charlie teaches kids how to sail. With safety always on his mind, teaching a bunch of rowdy juniors may not always be easy, but he has a handle on all of them. According to Charlie, the pay-off is great when the young sailors are enthusiastic about being in control of their own sailboat and enjoying the waters off Waikiki Yacht Club. "It's cool to see the kids react to seeing dolphins and turtles for the first time." Pretty soon, though, Charlie will have to leave the waters of Hawaii behind as he moves to New England to attend the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and join their sailing team.

Mark Mendelblatt and Mark Strube

Skipper Mark Mendelblatt (St. Petersburg, FL) and his crew, Mark Strube (West Palm Beach, FL), won a gold medal in the Star class last weekend at Kiel Week in Kiel, Germany, one of the largest sailing events in the world. Mendelblatt and Strube beat long-time rival and multiple Kiel Week-winner Robert Scheidt and his crew, Bruno Prada, from Brazil. The event, ranked by the International Sailing Federation (ISAF) as a Grade 1 event, attracted more than 5,000 sailors from 49 countries.

BRINGING BACK MEMORIES - SAVANNAH OLYMPIC SAILING REUNION SET FOR JULY

The Savannah Sailing Center in Georgia is holding a 10th Anniversary Reunion on July 22, 2006, for the 300 staff members and more than 1,500 people from across the nation who volunteered during the 1996 Olympic Sailing Regatta held in Savannah. Proceeds from the reunion will benefit the Savannah Sailing Center, Savannah’s legacy organization of the 1996 Olympic Games. The Center was created in 1993 and played a large role in the 1996 Olympic Sailing events by training all of the on-water volunteers and hosting more than 10 international regattas, including the 1996 U.S. Olympic Team Trials.

TORONTO SAILING WORLD LANDS' END NOOD REGATTA

The last day of a three-day regatta is when the leaders must protect what they have, being careful not to squander it, and the runners up go on the attack. And last Sunday, in the third and final day of the Lands' End Toronto NOOD Regatta on Lake Ontario (sanctioned by US SAILING), one team that launched a major offensive was Richard Reid's Beneteau 36.7 Zingara.

DO YOU KNOW A US SAILOR OF THE WEEK?

Who is the most passionate sailor you know? Who is always on the water, taking every rules quiz or searching for that perfect cruising lunch spot? Or do you know someone who is newly converted to the sport and soaking up information like a sponge? How about a junior sailor whom you have to command to "please step away from the dinghy." Do you know someone who gives as much time and energy to building a fleet or running races as they do to working at the office? We want to know about them!
> E-mail e-USSAILING's editors at eussailing@ussailing.org with a photo of that sailor and 100 words of background info. Check out past featured US SAILORS of the Week at http://www.ussailing.org/News/Sailor_of_the_Week/index.asp.
