ENCOURAGING PARTICIPATION AND PROMOTING EXCELLENCE
IN SAILING
ELIMINATIONS TO BE HELD FOR U.S. WOMEN'S SAILING CHAMPIONSHIP When thinking about the history of women's sailing
in the U.S., surely the U.S. Women's Sailing Championship comes to the minds
of many. First held in 1924, the Championship is believed to be the first
women's sailing championship in the world, definitely in the U.S. Over the
years, the Adams Cup, presented to the winner of this regatta, has been in
the hands of numerous highly respected sailors, including 5-time winner Lorna Whittelsey ('27, '28, '30, '31, and '34), 3-time champ Timothea Larr ('61,
'65, '73), and more recently Joni Palmer (2003 and 2005). This summer, women
from across the country have the opportunity to qualify to participate in
this unrivaled event by competing in local qualifying events to represent
their US SAILING Area. Open to all-female teams, the helm must be age 18 or
over, except for one crew-member who may be age 15 or older. This year's
U.S. Women's Sailing Championship will be held September 13-17 at Edgewater
Yacht Club in Cleveland, OH, and raced in J/24s.
DO YOU KNOW A US SAILOR OF THE WEEK? Who is the most passionate sailor you know? Who is
always on the water, taking every rules quiz or searching for that perfect
cruising lunch spot? Who do you know who has dreams about a well executed
jibe-set or a maintenance-free roller furler. Or do you know someone who is
newly converted to the sport and soaking up information like a sponge? How
about a junior sailor whom you have to command to "please step away from the
dinghy." Do you know someone who gives as much time and energy to building a
fleet or running races as they do to working at the office? We want to know
about them! RANKING SYSTEM DETERMINED FOR 2007 US SAILING TEAM US SAILING has determined the ranking system for the
2007 US Sailing Team. Each year, US SAILING names the members of the US
Sailing Team based on athletes’ performances at a series of qualifying
regattas. The 2007 ranking system names at least three qualifying events for
each Olympic class. US SAILING’s 2007 Rolex Miami OCR and the Pre-Trials are
mandatory events for all 11 classes. As part of US SAILING's Olympic Sailing
Committee (OSC) ongoing mission to facilitate the success of elite
performance athletes, the US Sailing Team will choose the top three (3)
ranked sailors in each of the 11 classes. US SAILING TEAM-MEMBERS COMPETE OVERSEAS
Many US Sailing Team-members are in Europe competing in major international
regattas. Here's an overview of where they can be found in the next week: JUNIOR SAILING PROGRAMS - PROTECT YOUR SAILORS AND INSTRUCTORS
Junior sailing programs are the spawning grounds for the future: but they
are also an area of particular concern for those responsible for protecting
your club’s assets and interests. What protection is available for
non-member children? How does your policy respond to an accident that occurs
while your sailing team is traveling to represent your club at a regatta or
to an injured instructor suing you under the Federal Jones Act? The Burgee
Program begins with a thorough assessment of your club’s activities. Then
together we craft a broad insurance program that meets your club’s special
requirements. MAN'S BEST FRIEND LOOKS GOOD WITH US SAILING DOG COLLAR
US SAILING's online store has just received new dog collars! Now you can
make sure that your dog, no matter if he/she enjoys going out on the water
with you, will look the part of being a member of a sailing family. These
collars are comfortable, handsome and strong. The hardware is
hand-polished solid cast brass and the nylon is first rate. Available with
navy or red nylon, both with US SAILING logo ribbon. Leashes coming soon! NATIONS CUP: ALL SET FOR NORTH AMERICAN REGIONAL FINAL THIS WEEK
Thursday June 8 marks the kick-off for the International Sailing Federation
(ISAF) Nations Cup Regional Final for North America in Charlotte Amalie
Harbor in St. Thomas, US Virgin Islands. Seven national open teams and four
women’s teams will compete in the ISAF Grade 2 event for the opportunity to
represent the North American region at the ISAF Nations Cup Grand Final in
Ireland. The match racing format means one-on-one competition with almost
continuous action on the opening days. Three races will be running at once
so all the teams can face each other in the first two round robins of
racing. J/24 WOMEN'S OPEN CHAMPIONSHIP Massachusetts will be the prime location this summer
for women sailors looking to qualify for the 2007 J/24 World Championship.
The J/24 Women’s Open Championship, a qualifier for the Worlds, will be held
July 13-16 in Marion, MA. According to race organizers, this is the first
time such an event is open to all female J/24 racers.
