On Saturday afternoon, April 25 a tragedy occurred during the Dauphin Island Regatta off the coast of Alabama in Mobile Bay. A number of sailboats capsized from a sudden storm that struck the race fleet resulting in several sailors losing their lives.
All of us at US Sailing – our staff, Board of Directors, and volunteers – are deeply saddened by this event, and are mourning the loss of life. Our thoughts go out to the deceased sailors, missing persons and their families as they navigate through these very difficult times.
US Sailing would also like to praise the efforts of the U.S. Coast Guard and all the volunteers in search of the remaining missing boaters.
Our commitment to safety at sea is paramount at US Sailing. As with past incidents, we look to assist the sailing community and advance the safety of the sport by learning from this tragedy. We will also continue to champion the many positive lessons and opportunities that sailing offers, and strive to ensure sailing remains as safe as possible.
