US SAILING

Private Coaching

Current Level 2 certification became mandatory for all  private coaches beginning in 2007.  If you wish to have your coach (or your parent if he or she is acting as a coach) on the water for either the clinic or the racing, they must be US SAILING approved in advance and must register online no later than  twenty one (21) days prior to the event. The reason for this new policy is twofold: 1) to ensure that all people on the race course are trained in safe motorboat operation and have First Aid and CPR; 2) to increase the quality of coaching for our youth sailors.

Private coaches seeking approval must have a current US SAILING Level 2 certification or its equivalent from a foreign NGB or be members of the 2006 or 2007 US Sailing Team.  In all cases, anyone applying to be a private coach must show evidence of current First Aid and CPR by submitting a scan of their certificate to Championships@ussailing.org or by faxing a copy to 401-683-0840.

Only private coaches that have been pre-approved through US SAILING through the online registration process and holding certification as a private coach will receive a coach boat flag.   Private coaches receiving coach boat flags must agree to work as directed by the US SAILING Junior Championships coach, be a member of the coaching team and provide commentary and advice to all competitors on as equal a basis as possible.  Coach boats will be required to be registered and to display flags provided.

Recertification should not be left to the last minute as the process can take up several weeks or more.  The first step is to complete the form right online at

If your certification(s) expired more than a year ago or you have any questions about your certification status, please contact Katie Ouellette, katieouellette@ussailing.org  or call her at 401-683-0800 ext. 610.

You can check a coach's status by going to http://www.ussailing.org/directory/member.asp and typing in their name. If your coach needs to get certification, he or she should do so prior to the event.

If you know of a club or organization that wishes to hold a course, please contact US SAILING to see if one can be arranged.
