US SAILING

Day 3 Report

Sunday, June 24

Weather Conditions

Sunday morning was hot and still.  The fleet were ashore at the beginning of the day, waiting for the breeze to fill in.  Many of the sailors clustered together to watch the second race of the America's Cup.  Joining them were several race officials and parents, themselves just returned from Valencia, whose comments provided additional insight into the day's racing.

Just before noon, lunch was served and the postponement flag dropped.  The sailors, eager to begin the championship, launched their boats and headed out into the lake.  The race course is split into two: one for the 29ers and one for the C420s, Radials and Lasers.

While results have not been posted at this writing, preliminary results in the Singlehanded fleets  show that David Hernandez has taken an early lead with a first and second in the Laser fleet.   In the Radial Fleet, Ian Heusler, just back from the Laser North Americans, had two wins in the first two races.

In Club 420s, three teams - Chris Barnard and Nicole Popp, Tyler Sinks and Morgane Renoir and Taylor Canfield and  Perry Emsiek -  have shown great consistency, all finishing in the top five in the first two races of the championship. The 29er fleet, with the top eligible teams competing for a chance to represent the United States at the Volvo ISAF Youth Worlds, four teams have all finished in the top five in the first two races.  They include 2005 doublehanded champion, Emily Dellenbaugh, sailing this year with Briana Provancha, Judge Ryan and Hans Henken, Oliver Toole and Willie McBride, and Taylor Lutz and Evan Aras.
