Day 5 – Tuesday, June 27

Day 2 of racing was a frustration for both competitors and the Race Committee.  Light air caused a postponement at the start of the day.  The 29er’s and Laser Full Rig’s went out at 10:00 am.  The 29er’s were started at 10:30 and the race was abandoned due to an approaching storm.  The winds started oscillating 180and the wind speed dropped from 6 kn to 2 kn.  With the approach of a second storm front, the competitors were sent back to the harbor.  A continuing line of storms moved north from Indiana with forecast predicting severe thunderstorms throughout the late afternoon and evening.   All racing for the day was postponed by the Race Committee at 3:30 pm.  The competitors filled their day with card games, bowling, tennis and the internet café.

Lunches were again provided for all competitors and committee people by Subway with Ice Mountain water provided by Nestle.  We should also thank PODS (Portable on Demand Storage) for providing storage pods for the water, boat equipment and supplies at the launch area.

In talking with many competitors, parents and coaches there was a great deal of disappointment in the postponement of racing for the day.  This was especially true because there appeared to be 4-6 kn of wind in the harbor.  The frustration was also felt by the Race Committee.  The Committee boats remained on the water most of the day searching for air.  The shore effect breeze diminished quickly as you moved away from the harbor.  Most of the racing area had winds of 1-2kn with winds moving all around the lake.  In anticipation of greatly improved conditions, the race day, for Wednesday, has been extended to 6:00 pm.

This evening’s program is highly anticipated.  Chef Carney is providing a Country Style Barbeque.  The staff is to be thanked for the highly enjoyable dinners provided throughout the event.  Buena Vista Pictures is presenting the evening’s entertainment:  Pirates of the Caribbean.  Making of the movie – “Pirates of the Caribbean:  Dead Man’s Chest,” and Volvo Ocean Racing Highlights – “The Black Pearl” – Volvo 70.
