Conditions

As the last of the sailors arrived in Detroit, those who were ready, rigged their boats and headed down the launch ramp onto Lake St. Clair, the venue for racing of the 2006 U.S. Youth Sailing Championships.  With dry conditions and winds from the Northwest, it was a perfect day for sailing.  US SAILING coach, Mike Kalin (pictured below with Chair Dan Bracciano) led a brief on-the-water warm up for the Advanced Racing clinic.  Sailors who arrived this morning busied themselves with their boats.

Later that afternoon, all sailors attended a Race Signal Seminar and a review of the event rules.  In the evening, the opening ceremonies, sponsored by Nautica, will begin and Dean Brenner will speak to the competitors on "How to become an Olympian".

Everyone has raved about the wonderful volunteers from Grosse Pointe Yacht Club and the facilities at the club itself.  Chair Dan Bracciano's  team were welcoming arriving sailors until the midnight hours as flights were delayed.  Today everyone is here, safe, sound and rigged up, ready to start the first full day of the Advanced Racing Clinic.
