2002 US Youth Sailing
Championship
Frequently Asked Questions
Is it true that the Laser is the
only single handed boat?
Yes, partly. The event is specifically designed to determine the US
Single and Double handed Youth Champions, and the Laser and Club 420 will
be used for those events. However, the event does include small
developmental fleets in the Europe Dinghy and International 470.
How do I find a charter boat?
There are a limited number
of charter boats, graciously provided by Vanguard Sailboats, for this
championship. Unfortunately, not everyone who requests a boat will receive
a one. If you need a boat for the championship, we strongly recommend
that you start looking early. Here are some hints:
1)
Contact the San Diego charter organizer at the email below
2)
Truck shipping
from the northeast
3)
Privately
charter through contacts of your own
Option
#1:
The Southern California 420 fleets and others have volunteered to help
find Lasers and 420s that you may charter in the San Diego area. Details
can be found on the San Diego Yacht Club web site at:
www.sdyc.org/raceinfo/Youth%20Champs.htm
or by contacting
Margie McKay at
frouwke1@aol.com.
420:
Charter fee $350; refundable damage deposit $200
Laser:
Charter fee $175; refundable damage deposit $200
Option # 2:
Ship your own boat via truck to San Diego and back. A truck will depart
from Barrington Yacht Club (Barrington, RI) on June 16 after the RIISA
Regatta. It will arrive at the San Diego Yacht Club on June 21. The truck
will depart SDYC on June 28 and return to the northeast a week later. The
location will be determined by a consensus of the boat owners. The cost
of the roundtrip is approximately $750 for doublehanded boats.
Singlehanded boats are welcome also – quotes will be provided. For more
information, contact Skip Whyte at skipwhyte@ussailing.org. Space is
limited. Act now!

Is the championship a
qualifier for the ISAF World Youth Championship?
Yes, the Laser division is a qualifier for the 2002 ISAF Youth World
Championship, male singlehanded division only.
How do I find out whether I've
been accepted?
The names of accepted sailors will be posted on the web in May. (www.ussailing.org/youthchamps/).
Letters will be sent to all applicants in May. Names of charter boat
recipients will also be posted and receive letters. Unfortunately this
information cannot be conveyed over the phone. Please do not call US
SAILING or the host club to see if you have been accepted or have received
a charter boat. Do call US SAILING if you do not receive a letter by the
end of May.
How do I find out more details
about the event?
The web site listed above will provide lots of great information about
the Youth Champs -- local conditions, map/directions, event schedule, and
much more. Check the site regularly for updates.
Can I change crew after I have
applied?
Crew changes will be granted only if there is a valid reason. Sailors
that wish to change sailing partners must submit a request in writing,
stating the reason. Requests should be addressed to Dick Hanneman, US
Youth Championship Committee Chair, c/o US SAILING, PO Box 1260,
Portsmouth, RI 02971, or
dickhann@swbell.net
Will coaches have access to
sailors on the water?
Coaches will have full access to the sailors up to the preparatory gun.
Spectator boats will be provided for coaches who don't bring their own
boats. Coaches with their own boats will be expected to participate if any
safety issues arise on the water. The sailing instructions go into more
detail on this subject. |
