Daily Reports
Day 4, Wednesday August 9

John Strassman, US SAILING's Junior Championship Chair reports:

Day three started out with a light Easterly breeze as the competitors sailed out to the race course on Lake St. Clair for the final day of racing.  PRO Marcia Everingham posted a six legged course but the breeze faltered and the race was shortened to four legs.  Mission Bay of Scott & Evan Hoffman and Eric Alamillo did what they had to do and beat Team FOR from Sarasota team to maintain their very thin lead.  The Noroton YC team of Will Vernon, Kelly Crane and Mat Nestor finished third.

For the final race of the series, the Team FOR  of Fred Strammer, Katrina Salk and Zeke Horowitz understood their position and drove the Mission Bay team deep into the pack.  The Shrewsbury team won the race with Bayview in second and Sarasota in third.  Mission Bay finished the race in seventh place which turned out to be their throw-out.

This result gave Sarasota a one point victory  to win US SAILING's Sears Cup.   Mission Bay in second place will earn the Judge’s Trophy.  The home team from Bayview YC of Blake Griffin Nicholas Ridenour and Kevin Ginnebaugh overcame a slow start and finished third overall

The entire team at Bayview Yacht Club, led by Dr. Mike Tapert did an excellent job hosting this year’s Chubb U.S. Junior Triplehanded Sailing Championship for the Sears Cup.  We would also like to thank the Protest Committee headed by Bill Thorpe. I personally want to thank Gary Shoemaker for the one-the-water reporting for days two and three which made these dispatches possible.

The Junior Championship would also like to thank the Chubb Group of Insurance Companies for their generous support not only of the championship but of the Area clinics leading up to the finals.
