The second day of racing for the Chubb U.S. Junior
Triplehanded Sailing Championship for the Sears Cup and Judges Trophy
again was sailed on Lake St. Clair in the same general vicinity as day
one.
The day’s breeze started out of the NE at 8 kts. The
Vermillion Boat Club team of Lauren Berk, Charlotte Bauer and John Riddle
started out strong by winning race six of the series and moved into first
place for the regatta. The home town team of Blake Griffin, Kevin
Ginnebaugh & Nick Ridenour from Bayview Yacht Club came in second and
Richmond Yacht Club team of Alex Lowry, David Leibenberg & Christina
Nagatani continued coming on strong with a third.
The second race set the tone for the day as the wind
showed an oscillating persistent shift to the right with more pressure. The
RC gave the kids a five leg upwind finish race. Team FOR from Sarasota came
roaring back and won a minute –thirty delta over second place finisherMission Bay
Yacht Club team of Scott Hoffman, Evan Hoffman & Eric Alamillo. Richmond
got another third and started moving up in the standings.
With the fleet at the upwind finish, the RC leap-frogged
the course and set the starting line for race eight in the vicinity of the
previous finish. The wind continued its persistent right movement with
increased velocity. Team For again showed impressive boat handling and
speed. By the time they reached the last upwind mark, they had over a 30
second lead and proceeded downwind in a full breeze clocked at 15kts.
The team from Sarasota, Fred Strammer, Katrina Salk &
Zeke Horowitz unfortunately seems to be plagued by gremlins. The shackle on
their spinnaker halyard opened up part way down the last leg. The
chute came down and the halyard stayed up. With the good breeze they made a
very game effort by blocking the oncoming boats by taking them to the
lay-lines but just could not hold off the next three boats. Mission Bay
came in first with Shrewsbury Sailing Club in second and the Sail Newport
team in third.
After eight races, the fleet has separated into A and B
fleets with a sizable gap between fifth and sixth places. Accounting for
the throw-out, Mission Bay has a two point lead over Team For with
Vermillion and Shrewsbury tied three points behind them. The Bayview team
are another two points back.
Everyone had an exhilarating spinnaker reach back to the
ranch. The fleet had a four to five mile joyride back in 15 kts. of
breeze. Needless to say, it was a crowd pleaser.
Tomorrow will certainly
serve up plenty of drama.
