Daily Reports
Day 2- Monday, August 7

The first day of racing for the Chubb U.S. Junior Triplehanded Sailing Championship for the Sears Cup was sailed on the Canadian side of Lake St. Clair about 3 miles NE of Bayview Yacht Club.  The wind started out about 310 degrees at six to seven knots PRO Marcia Everingham got the races promptly at 10:30. The Area D team of Fred Strammer, Katrina Salk and Zeke Horowitz got a fast start out of the box and led wire to wire.  Area C from Shrewsbury Sailing and Yacht Club got second with the Vermillion Boat Club team coming in third.

The wind increased slightly for the second race and shifted to the right.  The oscillating pattern was to hold for the rest of the day.   The Area D team from Sarasota sailing for Team FOR again led all the way around.  The Area B team from Noroton YC got second and the Shrewsbury team getting third.

The wind continued to build for race three.  The local heroes from Bayview Yacht Club, Blake Griffin Nicholas Ridenour and Kevin Ginnebaugh showed the fleet how to sail the boats in the increased breeze and won the race.  The Mission Bay YC team representing Area J finished second.  The MBYC team of twins Scott & Evan Hoffman and Eric Alamillo added a second to two fourths in the first two races to move into third place for the regatta.  Several of the leaders faltered with Team FOR getting seriously tangled with the windward mark and lost many places   Noroton never got on tack and also finished deep.

The trend continued and the breeze continued to build with a distinct shift to the right and clearing skies.  The Bayview YC team won again but were held back by their two ninths in the first two races.  The Shrewsbury and Noroton teams were back in the hunt with a second and a third respectively.  The Mission Bay Team had a consistent fourth and moved into a tie for first with Team FOR.

PRO Marcia Everingham decided to sail a fifth race.  The forecasts for Tuesday and Wednesday made the decision to sail five in the ideal conditions on Lake St. Clair a popular call.  The last race of the day had many wind oscillations and positions changes from mark to mark. The Richmond Yacht Club team of Alex Lowry, Michael Scott and David Liebenberg sailing in their second Triplehanded Championship final won the race.  Shrewsbury got second and the Area K team from Wayzata showed their shifty lake sailing skilled and finished third.  Sarasota finished deep again and the totals for the day had the Area C team of Scott Layton, Bret Amheiter, and Ryan Riddle with a slim two point lead over Area J from Mission Bay YC and Sarasota and Vermillion are tied for third another two points behind.

Bayview Yacht Club must be commended for putting on a great show and an impressive fleet of support boats.  There were as many RC, coach and miscellaneous support boats as there were boats in the race.  Hats off to BYC.

Some of these results are pending protests.

Two days and five races to go.
