Day 1- Sunday, August 6

Conditions

The first day of the Chubb US Junior Triplehanded Sailing Championship started off with no breeze. As is the case in many of the US SAILING championships, the majority of the competitors are unfamiliar with the boats they will be racing in. However, clinic directors Rich Hunt and Bora Gulari got underway with chalk-talks and tuning tips for the Ultimate 20s on the dock.   Rich and Bora introduced the boats to the kids and got the boats rigged and ready to go.

Regatta Chair Dr. Mike Tapert and PRO Marcia Everingham kept the competitors on the dock until after lunch.  By that time a light easterly had filtered down the river to Bayview Yacht Club.  The kids got into the boats and were towed about 1.5 miles up current into Lake St. Clair.  The wind continued to play tricks until a very nice 10-12 kt. southwester overcame the weak thermal.

Meanwhile the competitors became familiar with the boats with several ad-hoc local additional coaches showing up to give pointers.  The practice race was run, many lessons were learned and the kids got back to the dock in time for the boat drawing and another tasty dinner from the BYC staff.

Bayview Yacht Club headed by Dr. J. "Mike" Tapert and his team have has welcomed the sailors with their wonderful hospitality.  The title sponsor, Chubb Insurances Group provided each sailor with an iTunes card - the kids were thrilled but the adults are jealous.  Full slate of races are due to start tomorrow and the forecast calls for better winds.   A full report will be posted after tomorrow’s racing.
