US SAILING

Full Report - Day 2

August 13

Racing for the Chubb U.S. Junior Sailing Championships began today and the competitors had another great day on the water.

The breeze initially came in from the NNW but was overpowered by the SE sea breeze around noon on both race courses.  The U.S. Junior Singlehanded Sailing Championship for the Smythe Trophy and the U.S. Junior Doublehanded Sailing Championship for the Bemis Trophy sailed on the same race course off of Mantoloking YC and the U.S. Junior Triplehanded Sailing Championship for the Sears Cup is being sailed out of the Lavallette YC.  The wind filled in very nicely and the Race Committees on both courses decided to get in five races today.

On the Laser course, Cliff Porter from Lake Geneva, WI had a consistently good day with a 2, 2, 3, 7, and 1 to take the first day lead with 15 points. Cleve Hancock from Clearwater YC, Florida won the second race and finished the day with 21 points. Caleb Paine from Southwestern YC, San Diego won races three and four but is counting a tenth and a twelfth along with a third and is chasing Cliff and Cleve with 27 points.  Cameron Summers from Alamitos Bay YC, Long Beach, CA won the first race and is currently in eighth.

The top of the 420 scoreboard is crowded with the Pequot YC team of Brendan Kopp and Michael Costello is in the lead with 23 points, the Chicago YC team of Stephanie Hudson and Laura McKenna in second with 25 points and the Tred Avon team of Patrick Kana and Elizabeth Dudley are in third with 28 points.  Bemis veterans Tyler Woodbridge and Ian Towill from Kaneohe YC, HI won the fourth race.

After five races today the kids will be very hungry and will be ready for the “Island Dinner” hosted by Vanguard Sailboats at the Lavallette YC this evening.

Racing for the Championships continue tomorrow and conclude on Wednesday.  More daily reports will follow.
