The second day of racing for the Chubb US Junior
Single and Doublehanded Sailing Championship for the Smythe and Bemis
Trophies had an earlier start time. There was satisfactory wind but the
RC had technical difficulties and the first race got started about 1100.
The Lasers were sent off first and while the 420’s were in sequence, a
brief, sharp rain cloud came through and gave the Lasers a full tilt ride
and the 420’s start was general recalled.
The squall came through and then the wind died for an
hour.
The new breeze slowly came in at 170-175 degrees and
initially was 7-8 kts with significant oscillations. As the afternoon went
on the breeze increased to 12-14 and the oscillations decreased. PRO Jim
Tichenor showed incredible patience today. The weather was not cooperating,
the RC equipment had gremlins and the regatta had to get some races on the
board. Jim hung in there and set one good course after another.
The kids had a long day in the sun but both fleets
finally got five races in. The third and final day of racing is tomorrow.
