The last day
brought perfect sailing conditions. The morning race started on time with
the wind blowing steadily from the South-Southwest at 12-14 knots under
sunny skies. The wind built to 14-17 knots for the second race giving the
sailors a full range of wind conditions to complete the regatta. Racing
was hotly contested for the final standings and the fleet was very close
from front to back. Racers got some variety today with trapezoid courses.
It was a great concluding day for a highly talented group of junior
sailors from all over the United States.
The Race Committee under the direction of PRO Spyder Fortier did a great
job completing the full 10-race schedule with the excellent courses
throughout. The sailors appreciated the excellent hospitality of the New
Bedford Yacht Club.
In
the U.S.Junior Singlehanded (Smythe Trophy) Championship competition
Patrick Curran (Riverton Yacht Club) finished in first place with at total
of 28.00 points; Sean Kelly (San Francisco Yacht Club) came in second with
a total of 31.00 points; and Michael Easton (MIT Nautical Association)
finished in third place with a total of 47.00 points.
At the award’s
ceremony immediately following the conclusion of the races, Mary Kavanaugh,
event chair commented on the outstanding job that the volunteers from New
Bedford Yacht Club had done; recognized the national judges; thank the
race committee for all their efforts; and congratulated the junior sailors
on their achievement of competing in this event.
