SISTERS WIN YOUTH
MULTIHULL CHAMPIONSHIP
Sarah and
Elizabeth
Newberry win the U.S. Youth Multihull Championship for 2006. This is
the first time an all-girl team has won this event. They established their
position early in the competition with 3 first place finishes on day one and
never looked back. This was the team with confidence and determination and a
low score of 12 points in 9 races. When asked when they thought they would
win, Sarah said “after the first day.” These girls, Sarah, age 18, and Lizzy,
only 12, sized up the competition and made all the right moves. They banged
the corners tight and sailed downwind with ease. After the award ceremony,
all the boys could manage was dunking these two champions in the yacht club
pool. Like true champions they were all smiles.
Because Sarah will age out before the ISAF youth championship next year,
second place finishers with 18 points Eric Raybon and Jason Bilow will
challenge the World’s best youth multihull sailors in Kingston, Ontario,
Canada in 2007.
Finishing third with a close 19 points were Luke Lawrence and Alex Sachs.
The winner of the W. Darline Hobock sportsmanship award was Sam Ingham for
his helping all on and off the beach during rotation
changes.
Miami Yacht Club was host for this year’s event and Commodore Rick Harty was
delighted to see all the young sailors. This club has a strong Multihull
connection dating back to the 1970s when Sarah and Lizzy’s great-grandfather, Arthur Livingston, brought the first Tornado to MYC.
