The final day of racing in
the 2006 U.S. Youth Mulithull Championship for the Arthur J. Stevens Trophy
turned everything around, except for the leaders, sisters Sarah and
Elizabeth Newberry (Miami, Fla.) who finished their winning ways and won
this year's championship. Sarah, last year's winner of the
sportsmanship award, and her sister had been practicing together for two
weeks prior to the event and do not normally sail together. Sarah
said, "I thought we were going to be so bad; we weren't very coordinated to
start with but Elizabeth turned out to be a very good crew."
Sailing in a round robin
format, the competitors commented that they liked the format because while
they were sitting on the beach between races, it gave them the opportunity
to see the course and what the wind was doing.
Watching from the beach paid
off for Eric Raybon and Jason Bilow (Shrewsbury, NJ), who sail out of
Sandy Hook Bay Catamaran Club. Eric, a
self-described "cat lad" had quite a day. He was not in the top four after
the first two days of the championship, but modestly described his results
today as having caught some breaks with two firsts and a second. The
team only beat third place finishers Luke Lawrence (Palm City, Fla)
and Alex Sachs (Coral Gables, Fla) by one point. Sam Ingham won the Darline
Hobock Sportsmanship Award.
Because the winner,
Sarah Newberry will be too old to sail in the 2007 Volvo ISAF Youth Worlds,
Raybon and Bilow will become members of the US Sailing Team in 2007 and
compete in the multihull division.
