The 2nd annual US Youth Multihull Championship was sailed July 12-14 at Port Clinton Yacht Club, Port Clinton, Ohio. Eighteen young sailors from Ohio, Michigan, Florida, Connecticut, New Jersey and New York competed in new Mystère 4.3s. Seven races with one throwout were completed in ideal weather on Lake Erie.

Chris Batchelor of Maui Jim Sailing and Laura Young, Port Clinton YC, swept the series with 2-1-1-1-1-1-1 for 6 points. What an outstanding performance! They were awarded the Hoyt-Jolley Trophy, US SAILING medals and US SAILING team jackets. They will become members of the US SAILING Youth Team and are eligible to represent the USA at the ISAF youth championships in Portugal in July 2003.

2nd, Marc Kennedy and Frank Burns, Catamaran Racing Assn. of Michigan, 18 pts.
3rd, Harry Newkirk and Tommy Fruitticher, Key Sailing Team, 20 pts.
4th, Bret Sullivan and Matt Keenan, NAHCA Fleet 250, 24 pts.
5th, Jonathan Wasielewski and Kristen Attard, Jolly Roger Sailing Club, 25 pts.
These teams also received US SAILING medals.

Members from the host club and multihull sailors from around the area did an out-standing job hosting the event. Some of those who performed yeoman service were:
Dave Nighswander, Regatta Chairman; Mike & Carol Fahle who arranged for the Mystere 4.3s and worked diligently to get the boats built and maintained as well as managed race committee duties; Deb Schaefer & Jim Frederick, Housing & Transportation, with Kathy Clark, assisting chaperone the teams; Jamie Diamond, Beach Captain; Doug Young, Dave Fort, and many, many others. We were glad to see several parents and coaches accompanying the teams this year. These included
Jamy Livingston, Mark Batchelor, Kirk Newkirk, Tom Tullo, the Youngs, the Attards and others. Art Stevens and Darline Hobock represented US SAILING’s Multihull Committee. Teams and chaperones were housed at the Camp Sabroski bunkhouse.

Thanks again to Port Clinton Yacht Club for a terrific regatta and gracious hospitality.
