Selection Process

The following is the procedure used by the U.S. Women’s Championship Selection Committee to select participants in the U.S. Women’s Sailing Championship.   The U.S. Women’s Sailing Champs selectors are a team of four people. Each application is ranked by more than one person and then ranked overall. Remember, we have access to the internet.  Do not fudge results!

Selection Procedure

Score each resume using the criteria below.  Though this will be difficult in many cases, it is VERY important, particularly in the mid-ranged categories. The maximum total score is 100.

Race Experience

Best Regatta finish- including class, date, number of entries, and position on boat

Best Finish in Regatta relative to other female skippers

Best Final Position

Biggest Regatta Finish- including class, date, number of entries, number of races, and final position.

Relevance of boats sailed to boat used in Championship final

Best Junior or College sailing finishes (for younger competitors)

Past participation in U.S. Women’s Sailing Championship

Adherence to  Conditions, which provide for one entry from each Area to maintain geographic diversity

Consideration to new entrants for tie-breakers

The intent of the system is to accept all resumes that scored 90 or above and then the next high scoring teams.  If all the top teams cannot be accepted, the Selection Committee Chairman will contact the Selection Committee member before one of the teams is not accepted.  Selectors should keep detailed records of decisions with respect to each applicant.

Categories:
Total  Average Score:

100 - 90 - excellent chance to win the regatta

89 -80 - great sailor, could do very well

79 - 70 - competitive

69 - 60 - only expected to be moderately competitive

59 and below - not competitive at this level but has potential

Keep in mind that comments and records will only be reviewed by the Selection Committee Chairman and are STRICTLY CONFIDENTIAL.

You may want to research each application's ability and background by:

            a. examining regatta results

            b. drawing on personal knowledge

            c. researching the relative difficulty of regattas held and the level of competition

While ranking applicants, the Selection Committee members must keep in mind the single most common "complaint" we receive is that a team who did not get accepted regularly beats another team who did get accepted. Research and knowledge should minimize this occurrence.

AS THE NATIONAL GOVERNING BODY FOR SAILING IN THE UNITED STATES, SELECTORS MAY NOT DISCRIMINATE BASED UPON THE APPLICANT'S RACE, COLOR, RELIGION, AGE, SEX OR NATIONAL ORIGIN.
