Day 3 –

Day Three of racing
started like the previous ones, with a postponement and raising “AP” at
0850. The flag was lowered at 0944, and preparations for Race 6 were
underway.
Race 6 was a five leg
windward-leeward course at 080’ starting in 10k of wind. The team from
Davis Island Yacht Club was OCS and
restarted correctly. Most of the top teams, Vicki Sodaro (San Francisco
Yacht Club), Joni Palmer (Deep Creek Yacht Club), and Kathy Irwin (Rush
Creek Yacht Club), led the fleet up the left side of the course on the
first beat. At the weather mark, the Vineyard Haven Yacht Club team was
first by a few boat lengths, followed in a parade to the leeward mark, by
the rest of the fleet. At the leeward mark, Sodaro passed Besse, and the
rest of the fleet continued the parade. On the next beat, all the boats
went left, but there were no place changes for the rest of the race,
except for the last three places.
The second race of the
day (Race 7), was started promptly after the competitors changed boats, as
the wind remained steady in direction, although there was a little
decrease in velocity. Gail Heausler (Davis
Island Yacht Club) hit the starting mark, and restarted. A course
change was made after the first beat , and the wind velocity continued to
decrease. Joni Palmer followed closely by Kathryn Meyer (Corinthian
Yacht Club Seattle) moved out on the fleet with a large lead,
followed by a group of six boats in a tight pack as they approached the
leeward mark. Vicki Sodaro emerged from the pack and passed Palmer on
the second leeward leg. The top five boats were still tightly bunched.
After the fleet passed the second windward mark, there were no changes in
positions.
After unsuccessfully
trying to set a line and course in the bay, the Race Committee postponed
Race 8 until Friday and the fleet returned to the club for a refreshing
group photo in the pool.
