Conditions on the third
day of the U.S. Women's Match Race Championship was an excellent day of
racing. The weather gods smiled down on the racers, competitors and
umpires. There was not quite enough light today to finish the entire second
round robin, so the racers were brought in with one flight and two matches
unsailed.
Racing started at the
stroke of eleven, with a nice 6-8 knot breeze. Throughout the day, the
breeze moved back and forth some, with the speeds ranging from 6-10. Sandy
Hayes sailed an excellent regatta, losing only her first match of the round
robin, and last race today, but in between, she won every match.
Deb Capozzi ended the day
with a total of 11 wins, and had a spectacular match with Liz Baylis -the
match saw Capozzi get two flags just after the pre-start and she was
required to do both penalties. Then, part up the leg, she and Baylis had
another go round, and Baylis was penalized. Baylis was unable to catch up
and do her penalty, Capozzi went on to win the match.
The round robin is now
over, and since it was left with races to be sailed, the fractional point
scoring system had to be used to determine who moved on to the semi-finals.
In the fractional point system, there is one point between teams. For
example, if team A sails team B twice, and beats them both times, team A
gets one point. If team C sails team D twice, and each team wins one, they
each get ½ point. If team F only sails team G once and wins, (since the
round robin was ended early), then team F gets 1 point.
Moving into tomorrow's
semi-finals are Hayes, Capozzi, Baylis and Lovell. Hayes will sail Lovell,
and Capozzi versus Baylis.
