Full Report - Day 1

Oyster Bay, NY. (October 19, 2007) -  Twenty-two teams completed the first day of the 2007 U.S. Team Racing Championship in wind which started at 8 knots and ended the day with rain and gusts to 22 knots.   During the first half of the day all teams competed in a Swiss League Series of 41 races to determine in which league they would compete.

Seven teams advanced to the Gold League with three wins after four rotations.  These teams were the Woodsocket Rockets, Whishbone, Larchmont Yacht Club, T.Bone & Lads, Ocean Alliance, NYYC Silver Panda and SDYC.

The Silver League with two wins and two losses to their record were Operation Stonewall, The 9-OH, Bovoni Stretch, Sip  (U.S. Virgin Islands) N' Dip, NYYC Amateur Hour, Tap N' Go, Play One and Bermuda Triangle.

The Bronze League, consisting of those teams with three losses are Mystic River Mudheads, Stop Making Sense, Seawanhaka Corinthian Yacht Club, Team McGill (Team Canada), Team Redeem, One Night Only and Tabor Seawolves (National high school team racing champions).

Tim Fallon of Wishbone raved about the venue; "The racing is great as is typical at these championship events.  One thing that particularly stands out about Seawanhaka is they have pulled the moorings right off the Club so we can enjoy watching the action when we're not on the water."

Friday's racing format qualified teams into gold, silver, and bronze brackets.  Saturday's racing will give the competitors a chance to match up against like competition.  Sunday will provide the battleground for teams  to race quarter, semi's, and finals.  At this point in the regatta, every team has a chance to qualify for the finals and win the Championship.

Gavin O'Hare, Chairman of the US Sailing Championship Committee stressed that this was the largest U.S. Sailing Team Racing Championship ever.  Twenty-two teams of six (132 sailors), 24 Vanguard 15 sailboats, 19 volunteer umpires, 40 yacht club volunteer race committee and regatta support worked to complete 69 races on this stormy fall day- no small task.
