Day 3 – Friday, September 24, 2004

The second Round Robin began on Friday on Tampa Bay, site of the 2004 U.S. Match Race Championship, sponsored by Rolex Watch U.S.A.  The standings by the lunch break saw Ziegler, Hardesty, and defending champion, Hollerbach tied with four wins with three flights to go.

The leaders met each other after lunch.  Spirited racing with many flags from competitors indicates that lunch did not settle well.  In the final race of the last flight, Karl Ziegler with crew Dean Brenner and Mike Welch edged out Bill Hardesty and crew Jeff Nelson and Brian Bissel to hold the lead at the end of stage 2.  Standings at the end of the second round robin:

Karl Ziegler                  (SCYC)

Bill Hardesty                (SDYC)

Nathan Hollerbach        (BYC)

Andy Lovell                  (SYC)

Colin Campbell             (KHYC)

Chris Van Tol               (BYC)

Robby Brown               (DIYC)

Brian Comfort              (Sail Newport)

The top four teams go on to the semi-finals tomorrow.  The next hurricane is on the way and is expected to arrive late tomorrow.  It could be windy, although the forecast is for northerlies at 15 -20 knots and the barometer is falling.
