TEAM LOVELL REMAINS UNDEFEATED AFTER TWO DAYS OF TOUGH COMPETITION IN UBS CHALLENGE U.S. CHAMPIONSHIP
Nation’s best amateur sailors continue pursuit to $100,000 purse NEWPORT, RHODE ISLAND, July 28, 2002 – After two days of tough competition, Team Lovell remains undefeated following two round robins and holds the best record heading into tomorrow’s semi-finals of the UBS Challenge U.S. Championship. Team Lovell, Team Cesare, Team Rodi, and Team Woodworth will compete for the top three spots that go on to race against the America’s Cup contenders in the UBS Challenge Finals. The UBS Challenge is the first and only sailing championship to pit the United States’ best amateur sailors against America’s Cup Teams for a purse of $100,000, one of sailing’s largest prizes. The UBS Challenge is sanctioned by US SAILING and is part of the prestigious Swedish Match Tour. Undefeated skipper, Andy Lovell from New Orleans, commented, “The key to our success can be attributed to outstanding teamwork by my crew members John Lovell, Watt Duffy and Jeff Irvine. We are thrilled with our results so far and will focus on placing in tomorrow’s race.” Today’s conditions were light and variable, 6-8 knots from the south-southeast.
